About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Advise product and engineering teams on privacy-first products and services, data management and use, EdTech, Advertising, and data governance
  • Support the public community platform, Ads, and Stack Overflow for Teams businesses
  • Advise on regulatory investigations, individual complaints, GDPR data subject access requests, and data retention
  • Provide subject matter expertise on global privacy law and regulation
  • Support the product lawyer in evaluating privacy laws, regulatory guidance, enforcement actions, and related guidelines
  • Develop and maintain expertise in data use and protection laws and advise on their business impact
  • Draft, review, structure, and negotiate data protection terms in commercial agreements, including master service agreements and DPAs
  • Collaborate with and support InfoSec to obtain and maintain security certifications
  • Advise Product and Engineering teams on privacy matters across products
  • Manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
  • Report to the Chief Legal Officer

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s Degree required
  • Juris Doctor (JD) Degree from an accredited law school
  • Membership in good standing in at least one U.S. State Bar
  • 6+ years of legal practice experience; in-house legal experience preferred
  • Ability to interact with and establish the respect and confidence of senior business leaders
  • Business-oriented problem solving and ability to partner across departments
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrable experience advising clients on privacy matters, Ads, and global privacy laws and regulations, including GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, GLBA, and other international data protection frameworks
  • Significant experience drafting and negotiating data protection terms in commercial contracts
  • Sound and pragmatic legal and business judgment on privacy and data protection issues
  • Ability to translate legal advice into actionable policies, processes, and programs
  • Ability to travel to various locations and attend conferences or training sessions
