About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Supervise the Underwater Archaeology section of the Bureau of Archaeological Research, Division of Historical Resources
  • Manage a team of up to five professional Career Service and OPS employees
  • Perform section administration, including timesheets, leave requests, hiring, disciplinary actions, and work plans
  • Plan and organize workload and workflow, including annual efficiency plans, staff changes, and budget requests
  • Plan, assign, and coordinate staff work; review section correspondence
  • Manage and oversee underwater field projects and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local statutes, rules, regulations, and ordinances
  • Supervise administration of the Exploration and Recovery permit program (1A-31, F.A.C.)
  • Represent the Department at public meetings, workshops, forums, webinars, and conference calls
  • Serve as primary contact for agencies, community groups, private consultants, and the public regarding underwater archaeological resources
  • Conduct and coordinate research on state-owned lands and collections focused on locating, protecting, preserving, and interpreting submerged cultural resources
  • Manage service and upkeep of the Underwater Archaeology Section’s vessels and equipment

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Minimum of six (6) years of professional underwater archaeology field experience
  • A master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Anthropology, Archaeology, Maritime Studies, or a closely related field may substitute for the required years of experience
  • Successfully completed a scientific diving program (AAUS or equivalent)
  • Boating Safety Education Identification Card from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire
  • Experience conducting submerged cultural resource surveys, including remote sensing, underwater site recording, and assessment
  • Knowledge of pertinent state and federal submerged cultural resource policy and legislation
  • Technical archaeological experience including report writing, data management, laboratory management, cataloging, and artifact documentation
  • Boating experience including launching, trailering, and operating vessels
  • Level 2 criminal background check and fingerprint submission
  • Advanced knowledge of underwater archaeological field procedures
  • Knowledge of state and federal submerged cultural resource law
  • Experience with remote sensing software/hardware, including SonarWiz5, Marine Sonic Sea Scan, G882, and ESRI GIS software suite
  • Ability to communicate clearly verbally and in writing
  • Preferred: qualifications, trainings, certifications, and experience to serve as the program’s Dive Safety Officer (DSO)
  • Preferred: three (3) years of supervisory experience in archaeology, anthropology, or maritime-related programs/projects
  • Preferred: three years of experience administering archaeological or maritime-related programs/projects
  • Preferred: knowledge of Florida’s submerged pre-contact and historic archaeological sites
  • Preferred: extensive GIS experience
  • Preferred: public speaking experience
  • Preferred: vessel/equipment maintenance and repair, including outboard motors, trailers, 12-volt wiring, fiberglass repair, airlift, dredge, and remote sensing equipment
