About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Respond to emergency and non-emergency calls
- Dispatch troopers and other state law enforcement officers
- Monitor and respond to radio and data communications traffic
- Coordinate efforts between the Florida Highway Patrol and other agencies, including the Florida Department of Transportation after crashes
- Receive, relay, and document call and incident details, law enforcement activity, and other information
- Serve as the vital communications link between the public and law enforcement
- Complete four-month classroom and on-the-job training across orientation, call taking, radio, combined call taking and radio, and shadowing phases
- Participate in the 911 Public Safety Telecommunicator exam and certification process
Requirements
What you’ll need- Willingness and ability to work rotating days and shifts, including weekends and holidays, to ensure 24/7 coverage
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- High school diploma or general equivalency diploma required
- Must successfully complete Level 2 background, CJIS, and SLERS security clearances, including fingerprint-based criminal records checks
- Must successfully complete drug screening, medical examination, and psychological examination
- Must be a U.S. citizen or lawfully authorized alien worker
- Must provide proof of U.S. citizenship or authorization to work in the U.S.
- FLHSMV does not provide employment sponsorship for H-1B, CPT, OPT, or STEM OPT
- Must obtain 911 Public Safety Telecommunicator certification within 12 months of hire
- Ability to maintain professionalism and composure during emergencies and stressful situations
- Clear verbal communication and active listening skills
- Ability to work cooperatively with law enforcement officers and agency partners
- Ability to understand, interpret, and apply information, maps, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and law enforcement terminology
- Critical thinking, judgment, and decision-making ability
- Ability to multitask across calls, caller interaction, information updates, and radio communications
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and integrity
- Proficiency operating two-way radio systems, multi-line telephones, computers, and Computer Aided Dispatch systems
