About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Provide basic mom-to-mom breastfeeding education, encouragement, and support to WIC pregnant, breastfeeding, and postpartum participants
- Manage an assigned peer counseling caseload and maintain routine participant contact
- Counsel participants in clinics, by telephone, through approved virtual methods, and through assigned hospital or community visits
- Complete initial and follow-up contacts according to local agency intervals, including approved availability outside normal clinic hours and on weekends
- Provide client-centered breastfeeding information within the peer counselor scope of practice
- Use approved educational materials and counseling techniques to support breastfeeding initiation, continuation, and individual feeding goals
- Maintain confidentiality and culturally responsive support under Department of Health, WIC, HIPAA, and data-security requirements
- Document contacts, follow-up plans, referrals, outcomes, time, and services in FL-WiSE, EARS, or HMS
- Complete required reports, logs, forms, and paperwork within established timeframes
- Facilitate or assist with breastfeeding classes, support groups, peer-led education, outreach events, and promotion projects
- Distribute approved materials and connect eligible participants with peer counseling services and community resources
- Recognize concerns requiring professional assessment and refer them to appropriate professionals
- Communicate with the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Coordinator regarding caseload needs and participant concerns
- Attend orientation, breastfeeding training, in-services, staff meetings, workshops, competency reviews, and observation/documentation reviews
- Monitor, issue, organize, restock, and inventory breastfeeding supplies and educational materials
- Check participant messages, maintain forms and materials, and travel between approved clinic, hospital, community, or outreach locations
- Travel to the Immokalee office when needed for program operations, staffing, meetings, training, outreach, or assigned duties
- Perform related duties consistent with the classification, training, funding requirements, and peer counselor scope of practice
Requirements
What you’ll need- Must have breastfed at least one baby
- Knowledge of basic breastfeeding practices, common breastfeeding concerns, normal lactation, and breastfeeding peer counselor role boundaries
- Ability to provide respectful mom-to-mom support and client-centered communication
- Ability to protect confidentiality and work with participants from varied backgrounds
- Ability to recognize concerns outside the peer counselor scope and use referral and follow-back processes
- Ability to learn and accurately use FL-WiSE, EARS or HMS, Microsoft Office applications, telephone systems, and other approved program technology
- Ability to organize a caseload, prioritize follow-up, maintain accurate records, meet deadlines, travel between assigned locations, and work independently
- Ability to communicate clearly in person, by telephone, and in writing
- Language skills and cultural familiarity aligned with participants served by the local agency
- May be required to work before, during, and/or beyond normal work hours or days during emergencies
- Ability to learn and communicate effectively, orally and in writing, in English
- Successful completion of required security background check and/or drug screening
- Completion of Form I-9 and employment eligibility verification through E-Verify
- Male applicants born on or after October 1, 1962, must meet Selective Services registration or exemption requirements
- Valid Florida driver license is preferred when travel between Naples and Immokalee WIC sites or community locations is required
