About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Assist with management of freshwater fisheries resources in FWC’s North Central Region covering 17 counties
  • Help design and implement biological studies on aquatic resources
  • Implement agency protocols to assess sportfish populations
  • Conduct aquatic resource management and enhancement activities
  • Interact with agency stakeholders, the public, and internal and external personnel
  • Compile, analyze, and interpret biological data for technical reports
  • Assist with development and implementation of fisheries management goals
  • Support stakeholder interaction, habitat enhancement, data analysis, stocking, fish feeding, fisheries sampling, coordination with cooperators and governmental agencies, and promotional and educational opportunities
  • Develop partnerships for aquatic resource management projects with federal, state, and local agencies and stakeholders
  • Establish and maintain contacts with anglers, fish camps, local government officials, tackle shop owners, fishing guides, outdoor media, fishing clubs, and conservation groups
  • Provide technical assistance by telephone, written communication, presentations, and lectures
  • Operate and maintain vehicles, boats, motors, trailers, and field sampling equipment
  • Work periodic weekends and evenings and undertake occasional overnight travel

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • 5 years’ professional experience in a closely related biological field or laboratory program is required
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in one of the biological sciences
  • A master’s degree in one of the biological sciences can substitute for the required experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in life or physical science or 4 years of applicable experience
  • Valid Florida driver’s license required and must be maintained
  • Valid boater safety education identification card prior to operating any agency vessel, or willingness and ability to obtain one within 30 days of hiring
  • Background in fisheries science with experience in biological field sampling and use of fisheries-related sampling equipment preferred
  • Knowledge of Florida freshwater fish, fish population dynamics, fish management techniques, data analysis techniques, freshwater fisheries sampling techniques, and related gear
  • Ability to work with internal and external personnel, managers, government officials, riparian landowners, and stakeholders
  • Ability to work independently to achieve project objectives
  • Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather and remote locations
  • Skilled in operating boats, outboard motors, trailers, and related equipment
  • Ability to travel overnight and work flexible hours
  • Current resume and cover letter required in addition to completed state application
