About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Use aerial imagery, online resources, archival documentation, and ArcGIS Pro Desktop to identify cemeteries for the Florida Master Site File
- Conduct historical research to verify locations and histories of historic and abandoned cemeteries throughout Florida
- Assist with public communication and outreach, including website updates, press releases, social media posts, marker guidance, and program communications
- Conduct genealogical research to identify ancestral and living families associated with historic and abandoned cemeteries
- Contribute to K-12 and undergraduate curriculum concerning abandoned and historic cemeteries
- Travel to confirm cemetery locations and conditions, engage partners and community groups, and gather information and oral histories
- Build and maintain an archive of electronic reference materials and organizational links
- Provide administrative support to the Historic Cemeteries Program Advisory Council, including scheduling, meeting planning, agendas, minutes, and travel support
- Perform additional duties and responsibilities as required
Requirements
What you’ll need- Four (4) years of experience working in archaeology, anthropology, historic preservation, architectural history, or a closely related social sciences field; a bachelor’s degree may substitute for the required experience
- Current resume and cover letter, not exceeding one page
- Three professional references with current and complete contact information
- Advanced ArcGIS Pro Desktop experience, including georeferencing historic maps and aerial images, digitizing point and polygon features, and using analysis tools
- Work sample demonstrating tool-level ArcGIS Pro Desktop competency
- Knowledge of cemetery studies and historic cemetery features
- Ability to conduct research and apply deductive reasoning
- Ability to travel, conduct site visits, and participate in program and public outreach events
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, after hours, and workdays longer than 8 hours
- Valid driver’s license
- Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Office suite applications
- Ability to apply cross-disciplinary research methodologies
- Clear verbal and written communication skills and ability to maintain effective working relationships
- Ability to stoop, squat, reach, bend, stretch, crawl, climb and/or twist
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and in densely vegetated and remote areas
- Level 2 criminal background check and fingerprint submission required
- Male applicants born on or after January 1, 1960, must meet Selective Services registration or exemption requirements
