About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Support the Chief Counsel and Deputy Chief Counsel for the Florida Highway Patrol, as well as other FHP Troop Legal Advisors as assigned.
  • Assist attorneys handling Department civil, administrative, and appellate litigation, primarily involving Florida Highway Patrol asset forfeitures.
  • Prepare drafts of pleadings, orders, motions, memoranda of law, and other legal correspondence.
  • Perform legal research and data collection.
  • Manage attorney calendars and track deadlines.
  • Maintain litigation files in the case management system.
  • File litigation documents with clerks of court and/or judges.
  • Request and schedule hearings with courts.

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Applicant responses to qualifying questions must be clearly stated within the employment history.
  • Software systems, actual work experience, and years of employment must be clearly defined.
  • Knowledge of court filing requirements.
  • Knowledge of proper preparation of court pleadings and legal correspondence.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and computer skills.
  • Aptitude to learn new software.
  • Ability to conduct legal and general research.
  • Ability to work independently of close supervision.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment with crucial attention to detail.
  • Ability to interact with customers courteously and professionally.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Day and overnight travel may be required.
  • Level 2 background investigation and CJIS security clearance, including fingerprinting, are conditions of employment.
  • Required disclosure of criminal records sealed or expunged for applicants requiring CJIS security clearance.
  • Two years of legal-office experience as a paralegal or legal assistant with significant experience drafting legal documents and pleadings is preferred.
  • Experience with civil forfeitures and/or criminal law practice is preferred.
  • Additional preferred experience: court filing requirements, online legal research tools, civil/appellate/administrative litigation, state travel rules and regulations, and scheduling/managing calendars.
