About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Help Alafia River State Park restore native ecosystems through integrated vegetation management
  • Identify and remove FISC Category I and II and CISMA Early Detection non-native plants
  • Perform invasive plant removal through mechanical and chemical means
  • Conduct training and surveying to support invasive plant management goals
  • Participate in resource management activities, restoration, and prescribed burning
  • Communicate and coordinate treatments with the park team
  • Perform daily preventive and corrective maintenance on equipment and assigned vehicles
  • Communicate equipment maintenance needs to management
  • Track daily progress on data sheets and enter information into a database
  • Report acreage covered, acreage treated, treatment amount and type, hours, location, species, and species coverage

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Valid driver's license
  • Knowledge of Florida natural communities, including native and non-native plants
  • Knowledge of land management techniques used to control invasive species
  • Knowledge of basic equipment operation and safety
  • Knowledge of natural systems management and prescribed fire
  • Familiarity with GPS devices, Avenza maps, and other survey applications
  • Experience with hand, power/gas tools, herbicide sprayers, all-wheel-drive equipment, and tractors
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment within its operational limits
  • Strong trailering experience and equipment maintenance and repair skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Ability to work in excessive heat, cold, biting insects, adverse environmental conditions, and uneven terrain
  • Ability to differentiate native and invasive plant species
  • Ability to operate 4x4 trucks and ATV/UTVs in variable terrain
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and read and follow a map
  • Ability to work in remote and isolated locations independently
  • Ability to perform physical labor with minimal supervision
  • Ability to operate and maintain vehicles, tools, and equipment
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and rotating shifts
  • Ability to maintain a valid driver's license
