Property Valuation District Advisor

About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Provide training, education, and support to municipal officials maintaining the statewide grand list for education funding
- Support approximately 40 municipalities in understanding and complying with statutory Grand List maintenance requirements
- Provide support on property valuations, Current Use, reappraisals, and related matters
- Conduct detailed analyses of municipal assessment practices through the annual Equalization Study
- Participate in division and department initiatives
- Gather requirements and test developer changes for software projects
- Work on legislative initiatives and reports
- Collaborate with the Property Valuation Field Director, Division Director, Assistant Director, Senior Fiscal Analysts, municipal officials, and others
- Conduct on-site visits and attend public meetings in assigned municipalities
- Deal constructively with irate taxpayers and public officials
Requirements
What you’ll need- Experience in real estate appraisal or assessment
- Knowledge of local government
- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to communicate challenging topics to individuals with varied backgrounds
- Bachelor's degree or higher and three (3) years or more of experience at or above a technical level in property assessment, property tax administration or real estate appraisal; or high school diploma or equivalent and five (5) years or more of such experience
- Employees who have not completed an advanced appraisal course approved by the Property Valuation and Review Division are required to complete it within two years of appointment
- Must be prepared to live within the assigned district
- Reliable personal transportation and private means of transportation must be available
- Must agree to be fingerprinted and pass a background check
- Must attend periodic meetings in the Montpelier main office and conduct on-site visits with town officials
- Must speak at public meetings, including possible evening meetings
- Must dedicate a portion of the residence to field office work
