About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Lead the technical side of Shopify Plus projects from initial prospect conversation through discovery, build, launch and handover
Join pre-sales conversations, prospect demos, RFP follow-ups and advise on platform and app choices
Contribute to pitches and RFP responses as the proposed technical lead
Lead discovery workshops covering integrations, technology stack and data migration
Review client themes, codebases, technology stacks, apps, integrations and data, and record performance baselines
Recommend store structure, theme approach, apps versus custom development, integration patterns, middleware and Shopify native features
Produce integrations and tech stack documents, technical specifications and development estimates
Present recommendations to client stakeholders and record decisions and scope changes
Own technical delivery as the client's main technical contact from kick-off to handover
Plan builds with project managers, including skills, effort, milestones, dependencies and sprint priorities
Scope and estimate large work items and change requests
Establish repositories, branching, pull request processes, automated checks and documentation
Brief, assign and unblock developers; review code for performance, security and accessibility
Coordinate technical work with client IT teams, suppliers, app and integration vendors, and Shopify Plus support
Identify and escalate delivery risks, reporting progress, risks and code quality to the Engineering Manager
Plan go-live, including timings, DNS, redirects, SEO checks and launch blockers
Support stores through the two-week post-launch warranty period
Train client teams through walkthroughs, written guides or short videos
Hand projects over to Growth Accelerator with developer overviews, decision logs and technical walkthroughs
Build complex components including custom Shopify apps, checkout extensions, Shopify Functions, integrations and theme architecture
Line-manage one or two developers through 1:1s, feedback and development plans
Mentor developers through pairing, code review and knowledge sharing
Contribute lessons from projects to retros, internal talks, standards, tooling and processes

Requirements

What you’ll need

5+ years' commercial experience as a full-stack developer, including at least 2 years as the lead developer or tech lead on client projects
3+ years delivering Shopify or Shopify Plus projects, including at least one build or replatform led from discovery through launch
Deep knowledge of Shopify Plus, including Online Store 2.0, Liquid, Admin and Storefront GraphQL APIs, metafields and metaobjects, B2B, platform limits and common workarounds
Broad knowledge of the Shopify app ecosystem and sound judgement on apps versus custom development
Experience building custom Shopify apps, Checkout and Customer Account UI Extensions, and Shopify Functions
Strong JavaScript (ES6+) and TypeScript
Backend development experience with Node.js and Supabase or a similar platform, including Postgres, REST and GraphQL APIs, and webhooks
Experience planning store migrations, including product, customer and order data, URL redirects and launch cutover
Proven experience leading client-facing technical sessions
Clear written and verbal communication with non-technical stakeholders
Track record of accurate estimating and scoping on large pieces of work and writing technical specifications
Experience leading a small development team through delegation, code review and mentoring
Proficient in Git and pull request workflows within multi-developer teams, including CI checks and branch protection
Disciplined approach to time tracking, task management and meeting deadlines across concurrent workstreams
