Key responsibilities & impact
  • Lead and manage the end-to-end design process with design partners from pursuit through construction documentation and key construction phases
  • Ensure alignment with contract requirements for scope, budget, and schedule to deliver best-value solutions
  • Integrate VDC, MEP, scheduling, and self-perform capabilities into design development and execution
  • Partner with clients, architects, engineers, contractors, designers, trade partners, and stakeholders to drive coordinated, high-quality design outcomes
  • Provide strategic leadership on design approach, validation, technical decision-making, cost management, and risk management
  • Ensure compliance with healthcare regulations and alignment with clinical operations
  • Lead infection control planning, patient safety, and operational continuity for healthcare facilities
  • Oversee daily design-services activities, resource planning, workload management, and budget oversight
  • Supervise team assignments and support coaching, mentoring, and hiring design integration and preconstruction talent
  • Advance VDC’s contribution to risk management and project success
  • Serve as the design-builder’s primary liaison to the Owner, design team, and trade partners
  • Lead integration of healthcare-specific design criteria, including clinical workflow, patient safety, and operational efficiency
  • Coordinate specialized healthcare systems, including medical gas, imaging equipment, nurse call, and critical MEP redundancy systems
  • Lead phased design and construction planning in active healthcare environments
  • Manage design from initial concept through final design across multiple projects or complex programs
  • Identify contractual, technical, and project risks and ensure appropriate design development for pursuits and milestone pricing
  • Lead A/E partnerships, including contract negotiations, scope alignment, fee validation, and milestone expectations
  • Review design documents and coordinate peer and technical reviews of building systems
  • Coordinate design-assist, design-build, and trade partner involvement
  • Develop and maintain design schedules and track milestone deliverables
  • Coordinate design milestones with bid package preparation, permitting, and construction sequencing
  • Integrate procurement strategies, long-lead materials, and vendor input into design milestone schedules
  • Coordinate Owner and authority having jurisdiction submittals for reviews, approvals, and permits
  • Develop and manage complex healthcare permitting strategies
  • Provide budget oversight and collaborate with estimators on trade costs and estimates
  • Lead value-management efforts and cost-effective material and system evaluations
  • Serve as the primary client contact for design-related matters
  • Translate client objectives and performance criteria into clear design direction
  • Conduct client design reviews to solicit direction and obtain approvals
  • Participate in proposals, interviews, business development initiatives, and industry events
  • Engage clinical user groups, facility leadership, and healthcare stakeholders to validate program requirements and design outcomes

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, or related field
  • 10+ years of Architecture, Engineering, or construction management experience, including extensive working experience with the design-build delivery process
  • Minimum four years of Design-Build delivery experience in all phases of design
  • Demonstrated ability in design-build project management and delivery, including management of external design and design-build trade partners, staff coordination, cost management, scheduling, and quality control/quality assurance
  • Thorough understanding of project management control systems, including design phase scheduling, cost control, procurement, and estimating
  • Strong organization and leadership skills, with experience in team building, training, and managing daily activities
  • Excellent listening, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent understanding of a designer’s business model
  • Ability to negotiate design service scope and associated fees
  • Ability to assist with A/E contract execution
  • Excellent understanding of the technical aspects of all building systems
  • Command of building codes and standards
  • Command of sustainability practices and principles
  • Proven excellence managing a design team, including a designer’s subconsultants
  • Ability to balance data, intuition, experience, and diverse perspectives in decision-making and problem solving
  • Ability to foster collaboration and navigate conflict effectively among internal and external stakeholders
  • Strong computer skills and experience with project management software and platforms
  • Experience in Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) and Revit/Building Information Modeling (BIM) software
  • Experience delivering healthcare projects, including coordination with clinical stakeholders and regulatory agencies
  • Working knowledge of healthcare codes, standards, and approval processes, including HCAI/OSHPD, FGI, NFPA, and Joint Commission
  • Experience managing projects in occupied or operational healthcare environments, including phasing and infection control planning
  • DBIA Certified Credential
  • Experience with ICRA implementation and healthcare compliance processes
  • Licensed Architect or Engineer (preferred)
  • LEED accredited professional (preferred)
