About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Own the AI Coach, including prompting, conversation state and progression, Pinecone retrieval, model selection and evaluation, and the safety/crisis layer
  • Test the AI Coach against scripted clinical scenarios and build evaluation harnesses for automated scenario-suite testing
  • Own the backend using Python 3.12, FastAPI, GraphQL, SQLAlchemy, PostgreSQL, and AWS
  • Own mobile and web delivery with React Native for iOS and Android and React for web
  • Manage App Store, Google Play, and Stripe subscriptions
  • Own release engineering, including CI/CD, environments, signing credentials, monitoring, backups, and rollback
  • Deliver fast, safe, frequent, reversible releases
  • Apply product sensibility to mobile and web user experience
  • Translate technical decisions into plain language for the founder and clinical team
  • Plan work, obtain approval on direction, execute independently, and report outcomes
  • Operate as the initial sole engineer with limited as-built documentation
  • Build systems enforcing legally and clinically approved safety thresholds and crisis handling
  • Report directly to the non-technical founder

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Proven experience shipping LLM-based products to production: prompt architecture, conversation state machines, RAG/retrieval, evals, moderation and safety handling
  • Strong backend engineering with Python, FastAPI or similar, SQL/PostgreSQL, and AWS
  • Comfortable owning infrastructure, CI/CD and production operations solo
  • Solid React Native and React experience, including shipping and debugging on both iOS and Android
  • Experience with in-app purchase flows on both mobile stores and Stripe on web
  • Demonstrated AI-first development practice and daily use of agentic coding tools
  • Judgement to review and own AI-generated code
  • Product sensibility and a genuine eye for mobile and web UX
  • Track record of owning a product or major system end-to-end with minimal technical oversight
  • Excellent written communication for a non-technical founder
  • Experience or demonstrable seriousness with privacy, security and access controls around personal/health data
  • Experience in mental health, health tech or other regulated/safety-critical consumer products (nice to have)
  • Experience taking over a codebase from an agency or departing team (nice to have)
  • Mobile release operations experience (nice to have)
  • Analytics and growth tooling experience (nice to have)
  • Voice features, push notification strategy, and CRM/email platform integrations (nice to have)
