About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Lead all aspects of U.S. and Canadian payroll operations, including processing, reporting, and compliance
  • Direct and develop Payroll Managers and Payroll Analysts through performance management, coaching, succession planning, and professional development
  • Establish and maintain payroll policies, procedures, internal controls, SOX controls, and governance practices
  • Serve as primary owner and subject matter expert for payroll processes, compliance, and systems
  • Oversee Workday Payroll, Time Tracking, Absence, Benefits, and Compensation configurations, enhancements, upgrades, testing, and implementations
  • Ensure compliance with U.S. and Canadian payroll tax and employment-related requirements
  • Oversee payroll tax filings, reconciliations, account maintenance, and issue resolution
  • Partner with Stock Administration, Finance, and Accounting on equity compensation payroll and tax treatment
  • Lead payroll participation in SOX, 401(k), workers’ compensation, financial, and other compliance audits
  • Oversee reconciliations and month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close activities
  • Monitor service metrics, identify risks, and improve efficiency, accuracy, and employee experience
  • Manage payroll vendor relationships and performance
  • Drive automation, standardization, scalability, and operational excellence initiatives
  • Act as escalation point for complex payroll matters
  • Support acquisitions, organizational changes, system implementations, and strategic initiatives impacting payroll
  • Maintain payroll documentation, governance, and control frameworks

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 10+ years of progressive payroll experience, including responsibility for complex, multi-state payroll operations
  • 3+ years of leadership experience, including managing managers and payroll professionals
  • Experience leading multi-state and Canadian payroll operations
  • Experience overseeing payroll compliance and internal controls
  • Experience managing payroll operations across diverse employee groups, classifications, pay structures, and employment types
  • Strong knowledge of payroll regulations, tax requirements, wage and hour compliance, and payroll controls
  • Experience partnering with Accounting, Finance, Tax, HR, and external vendors
  • Demonstrated success leading process improvement and operational efficiency initiatives
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities
  • Currently authorized to work in the United States without visa sponsorship now or in the future
  • Experience with Workday payroll and HR systems is preferred
