About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Solve technical problems in robot development where requirements, root causes, feasibility, or solutions are unclear
  • Define target states and constraints, distinguish facts from hypotheses, and develop candidate solutions from mechanics, mechanisms, materials, manufacturing, and related principles
  • Plan and conduct prototyping, measurement, experiments, and evaluations using internal and external resources
  • Lead changes to mechanisms, configurations, components, and manufacturing methods when existing approaches are insufficient
  • Own problems from identification and direction through implementation, validation on actual hardware, and recurrence prevention
  • Decide mechanical system architecture, key interfaces, and performance allocation for robots, learning-data collection devices, and related systems
  • Collaborate with electrical, controls, and software specialists on system design issues
  • Account for component sourcing, manufacturing, and assembly constraints from prototyping through production and ongoing operation
  • Investigate failures, validate performance, reliability, and maintainability, and confirm countermeasure effectiveness
  • Provide technical support, design reviews, mentoring, and guidance to development engineers
  • Lead resolution of cross-team critical issues and technical decision-making for the robot system
  • Communicate technical risks and validation results and align stakeholders on priorities, resources, and direction
  • Document reusable design rationale, failure cases, and evaluation methods
  • Perform hands-on design, assembly, experiments, and hardware evaluation

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • 7+ years of hands-on experience making design decisions by combining deep knowledge of mechanisms, drive systems, materials, strength and stiffness, and tolerancing with quantitative analysis and validation on physical hardware
  • Ability to design with 3D CAD, create drawings, design for manufacturing and assembly, and personally carry out assembly, evaluation, and failure analysis
  • Understanding of constraints related to sensors, actuators, electrical components, wiring, and thermal management, and ability to discuss system-level issues with electrical, controls, and software engineers
  • Extensive hands-on experience developing robots, mechatronic systems, or complex mechanical equipment, including ownership from concept through evaluation on physical hardware
  • Track record of solving unprecedented technical problems through self-generated hypotheses, prototyping, and experiments
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary technical problems and contributing through design reviews and technical guidance
  • Ability to turn unknowns and failures into concrete validation tasks and persist until solved
  • Ability to work across needed areas, incorporate specialist insights, and update hypotheses and designs based on experimental results
  • Willingness to take responsibility for the whole robot working through personal technical output and support of others
  • Ability to hold technical discussions and negotiations with domestic and international suppliers and drive internal technical discussions and collaboration in English
  • Nice-to-have: component-level design and development experience with end effectors, actuators, or robot arms
  • Nice-to-have: Leader/Follower teleoperation systems, robot hands, imitation learning or reinforcement learning hardware and data collection systems
  • Nice-to-have: force and tactile sensors, compliant mechanisms, and compact power transmission mechanisms
  • Nice-to-have: actuator requirements analysis and selection of reducers, motors, encoders, and bearings
  • Nice-to-have: actuator customization or development, durability and cost improvement, and manufacturing/procurement negotiation
  • Nice-to-have: research-to-product development, unit variation, calibration, maintenance, and production ramp-up of roughly 100–1,000 units
  • Nice-to-have: autonomous work in a fast-paced, goal-oriented environment
  • Nice-to-have: practical mechanical design under tight deadlines
  • Nice-to-have: 3D CAD experience, with SolidWorks as a plus
  • Nice-to-have: practical risk assessment and understanding of relevant laws and regulations
