About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Build relationships with up to 10–15 young people
  • Engage youth through meaningful conversation, creative approaches, goal-setting, support, and encouragement
  • Build relationships and collaborate with key adults in each young person’s life, including agency staff, foster parents, school/program staff, and other significant adults
  • Help young people explore interests and connect with aligned opportunities
  • Work one-on-one with young people to develop individualized academic and career development goals based on their interests and strengths
  • Support measurable steps toward academic and career goals
  • Connect young people to quality schools, programs, resources, opportunities, and peer-group supports
  • Help young people persist in academic and career settings, navigate challenges, celebrate successes, and prepare for next steps
  • Track weekly contacts, goals, completed steps, and other key data using an online platform
  • Learn and use the Care4 database
  • Participate in weekly staff meetings
  • Work primarily in the community across Manhattan, the Bronx, and NYC

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s degree and 2+ years of experience working with young people; OR an Associate or other accredited vocational degree and 3+ years of experience working with young people; OR a “credible messenger” with a background in foster care, criminal legal system, or other systems-involvement, some post-secondary experience, and 4+ years of significant experience working with young people in a professional, paid role
  • Ability to work some evening and weekend hours
  • Ability to form collaborative, working relationships with parents/families, school and agency staff
  • Consistent and reliable
  • Able to maintain healthy boundaries
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong time-management, organizational skills, and attention to detail
  • Ability to troubleshoot, advocate, and navigate obstacles where there is not always a clear-cut pathway
  • Ability to use trauma-informed techniques
  • Flexible and able to work independently
  • Valid driver’s license a plus
  • Ability to participate in in-person and virtual Teams meetings
  • Ability to meet youth in their homes and schools, sometimes involving walking up several flights of stairs
  • Ability to accompany youth by walking or via public transit, including to schools, DMV or IDNYC appointments, cultural institutions, movie screenings, and colleges
  • Ability to travel across NYC boroughs in one work day
  • Minimum 2-year commitment requested
