About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Contribute to excellence in health care and fulfill the mission of the unit
  • Exhibit strong customer service in daily interactions with the public, patients, staff, and physicians
  • Coordinate physicians’ schedules, calendars, mail, and meetings
  • Balance patient appointments and meetings
  • Complete disability, FMLA, and medical insurance forms within required timeframes
  • Communicate professionally and compassionately with patients, physicians, hospitals, radiology facilities, laboratories, insurance companies, and professional associations
  • Answer and respond to incoming calls
  • Manage on-call and hospital consults
  • Schedule appointments, including authorizations for Worker’s Compensation and MVA cases
  • Schedule and facilitate peer-to-peer requests
  • Provide backup for appointment-scheduling calls
  • Maintain computer databases and use scheduling, EMR, and related software
  • Collect payments for forms and x-ray requests
  • Obtain urgent or surgical authorizations for MRI, bone scans, and CT scans
  • Compose and type correspondence for physicians and patients
  • Coordinate communication about care and post-surgery needs
  • Participate in planning and evaluation of patient care through communication and documentation
  • Keep patients informed about scheduled tests and procedures
  • Cross-train to cover secretaries, schedulers, and operators
  • Report necessary information and unusual occurrences according to policies and procedures
  • Participate in performance improvement, committees, staff meetings, staff development, educational activities, orientation programs, and data collection
  • Follow Federal and State patient privacy and safety guidelines, including HIPAA and OSHA
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Minimum High School Diploma or GED required
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of the position
  • Candidate should have one (1) to three (3) years of medical office experience
  • Proficient knowledge of Medical Terminology
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills
  • Accurate and efficient data entry skills
  • Proficient computer software and database skills, including Microsoft Excel, Word, and EMR data entry
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment
  • Successful handling of confidential information
  • Professional communication with patients, peers, and physicians
  • Must understand and adhere to OrthoMaryland’s policies and procedures
  • Works cooperatively within own unit/department and with other units and departments
  • Above average spelling and typing skills
  • Ability to work independently, with excellent communications skills, organizational skills, and flexibility
  • Position entails prolonged sitting and typing with extensive computer and telephone use; lifting is limited
