About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Gather, process, analyze and visualize data to support daily and enterprise personal finance and business journalism
- Collaborate with reporters, editors and visual journalists on data-driven stories, emphasizing consumer-focused projects
- Spot check data work completed by team members and newsroom journalists
- Build and maintain tools that aid reporters and editors in data reporting
- Serve as an ambassador for data literacy across the newsroom
- Work with a multidisciplinary team of developers, data journalists and visual editors
- Contribute to long-term investigative projects, breaking news and immersive story formats
Requirements
What you’ll need- Strong news judgment with a good sense of how data best serves the story and the reader
- Experience working on data-driven stories and projects in a newsroom, particularly with a business or consumer journalism focus
- Experience with acquiring and maintaining datasets of varying sizes
- Experience with data analysis tools like Excel or Google Sheets
- Experience with coding languages like Python or R
- Experience visualizing data with a demonstrated understanding of best practices for graphic presentation of information in journalism
- Ability to juggle multiple projects of varying deadlines and sizes
- Cover letter with resume written by the applicant, not AI
- Additional asset: Experience integrating AI into data work or enthusiasm for doing so
- Additional asset: Experience working with APIs
- Additional asset: Experience with database management best practices and relevant AWS services
- Additional asset: Knowledge of available business-related datasets
- Additional asset: Familiarity with data visualization libraries
- Must work a minimum of two days a week in the Toronto office
