About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Gather, process, analyze and visualize data for daily and enterprise personal finance and business journalism
- Collaborate with reporters, editors and visual journalists on data-driven, consumer-focused stories
- Work with developers, data journalists and visual editors on multidisciplinary projects
- Contribute to long-term investigative projects, breaking news and immersive story formats
- Spot-check data work completed by team members and newsroom journalists
- Build and maintain tools that support reporters and editors in data reporting
- Promote data literacy across the newsroom
Requirements
What you’ll need- Strong news judgment with a good sense of how data best serves the story and the reader
- Experience working on data-driven stories and projects in a newsroom, particularly with a business or consumer journalism focus
- Experience acquiring and maintaining datasets of varying sizes
- Experience with Excel or Google Sheets
- Experience with Python or R
- Experience visualizing data with an understanding of best practices for graphic presentation of information in journalism
- Ability to juggle multiple projects with varying deadlines and sizes
- Cover letter with resume, written by the applicant and not AI
- Experience integrating AI into data work or enthusiasm for doing so is an asset
- Experience working with APIs is an asset
- Experience with database management best practices and relevant AWS services is an asset
- Knowledge of available business-related datasets is an asset
- Familiarity with data visualization libraries is an asset
- Minimum two days per week in the Toronto office
