About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Independently investigate highly complex and sensitive field property service claims, including outside field investigations and catastrophe response
- Lead investigations, assess coverage, issue reservation of rights and coverage letters, and escalate issues as needed
- Collaborate with legal, underwriting, vendors, agents, and other experts to evaluate claims and determine validity and value
- Lead cross-functional meetings and communicate complex information to diverse audiences
- Serve as a subject matter expert and technical resource for other adjusters
- Identify and pursue opportunities to transfer risk to appropriate entities
- Maintain comprehensive claim records and ensure documentation and jurisdictional compliance
- Lead quality and efficiency initiatives for complex claims workflows
- Identify and assign subrogation potential and support recovery efforts
- Ensure compliance with regulatory and company standards
- Use technology, data tools, and analytics to identify trends, correct inconsistencies, and optimize claims outcomes
- Negotiate high-value and contested claims using advanced strategies
- Investigate suspicious claims, identify fraud indicators, and refer cases to the Special Investigation Unit as needed
- Set reserves, authorize payments, and make financial decisions within authority
- Ensure proper data ingestion, labeling, and protection of personally identifiable information
- Prepare detailed reports summarizing findings and recommendations
- Mentor junior adjusters and support training, best practices, and educational materials
- Deliver empathetic communication, educate claimants and stakeholders, and ensure a positive customer experience
- Represent the company in mediations, arbitrations, and trials as needed
- Travel on short notice and conduct field inspections
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor’s degree preferred or equivalent experience
- Typically 8+ years of industry experience
- Industry designation relevant to the role preferred
- Must possess or obtain and maintain appropriate state adjuster licenses and continuing education credits
- Valid driver’s license
- Fluent in Xactimate usage with level 3 certification or ability to achieve
- Strong knowledge of local geography, regulations, public safety agencies, applicable statutes, regulations, case law, and third-party legal liability concepts
- Skilled in negotiation, strategy development, judgment, and decision-making, including litigation and compliance matters
- Expert-level insurance knowledge and deep understanding of legal and regulatory frameworks
- Clear and effective verbal and written communication skills with empathy
- Strong organization, time management, and desk management skills
- Ability to analyze complex issues, evaluate risks and outcomes, and act independently within authority
- Ability to collaborate with legal, underwriting, and other internal and external experts
- Skilled in claims systems and Microsoft Office Suite
- Ability to use a personal computer and standard office equipment
- Ability to sit and/or stand for extended periods
- Required to work on-site as needed
- Ability to travel as necessary
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, changing, or stressful environment
- Ability to perform work in a noisy/loud work environment
- May be required to maintain sufficient home-based internet connection
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle 4–5 hours per day and repeatedly enter and exit the vehicle
- Ability to load and unload equipment and supplies weighing up to 30 pounds
- Ability to bend, walk, and climb for several consecutive hours while inspecting damaged buildings
- Ability to safely use a ladder and maintain balance while inspecting roofs
- Ability to perform field work in adverse weather
