About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide leadership and facilitation for project or program solution and technical design
  • Guide projects on high-level solution and technical approach
  • Engage with the broader project team and represent solution and technical design at architecture review board meetings
  • Own the project solution, technical architecture process, and architecture artifacts
  • Understand and enforce enterprise architectural principles, standards, and patterns at the project level
  • Consult with architecture team members as required
  • Partner with business stakeholders, business analysts, solution architects, information architects, and data architects to design and deliver business solutions
  • Define technical approach, high-level design, and detailed project design according to architectural standards
  • Enforce standard tools and products across projects
  • Champion and conform applications and infrastructure to accepted Secure Development Operations practices
  • Identify and document nonfunctional requirements for solutions and technical designs
  • Support implementation, subject matter expert, and production support teams with troubleshooting and root cause analysis
  • Collaborate with the project manager on project status and resource estimation
  • Assist with identifying and mitigating risks to solution success, systems, infrastructure, and business processes
  • Address security, performance, and data privacy through configuration and implementation reviews
  • Explain existing system capabilities and modifications to business users
  • Leverage shared capabilities, products, software, and infrastructure in proposed solutions
  • Review vendor and internal technical documentation for accuracy and business alignment
  • Review and approve technical specifications and support delivery processes
  • Mentor technical leads and developers on architecture and system design
  • Ensure compliance with approved software development methodologies
  • Work within waterfall, agile, or hybrid SDLC approaches
  • Communicate technical and conceptual information to provide architecture leadership throughout projects

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, system analysis or a related study, or equivalent experience
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States without requiring sponsorship now or in the future (lawful permanent residence or US citizen)
  • Minimum of 2–5 years of design and implementation experience in IT or consulting
  • Deep knowledge in at least one of: network design, security design, middleware, distributed systems, storage, endpoints, or database platforms
  • Exposure to multiple technical configurations, technologies, and processing environments
  • Hands-on experience with Visio, PowerPoint, or similar tools for architecture diagramming and presentation
  • Exposure to multiple, diverse business systems, technologies, and processing environments
  • 5+ years’ experience with database platforms and supporting infrastructure, including SQL, Oracle, or DB2
  • Understanding how changes and updates affect other systems and infrastructure
  • Experience with varying hardware and virtualization vendors and manufacturers
  • Strong interpersonal skills in teamwork, facilitation, collaboration, and negotiation
  • Strong planning, facilitation, and organizational skills
  • Solid written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to understand strategic and tactical perspectives
  • Ability to translate business needs into solution and technical architecture requirements
  • Ability to estimate the financial impact of solution architecture options
  • Ability to define multiple solution options to business problems
  • Knowledge of key aspects of The Hanover’s business
  • Basic knowledge of information principles and policies
  • Insurance industry experience and product knowledge preferred
