About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Lead the development, execution, and implementation of medium-complexity packaging systems projects with minimal direction
- Perform conceptual packaging systems engineering design, cost estimation, system and project proposal development, supplier evaluations, equipment and system installation and startup
- Transition completed systems to plant operations and maintenance staff
- Provide technical analyses, alternatives, cost estimates, feasibility assessments, specifications, and recommendations
- Design optimal packaging solutions and provide packaging and controls support through project development, design, installation, checkout, commissioning, training, and transition
- Deliver system operation manuals, maintenance documents, and technical knowledge to plant staff
- Identify process and manufacturing alternatives that meet new business requirements or establish functional excellence
- Diagnose root causes through cross-functional processes and provide resolution options
- Ensure packaging systems project implementation complies with corporate capital control policies and procedures
- Build relationships with external equipment manufacturers and suppliers to identify and develop new technologies
- Provide technical development, schedule, and budgeting recommendations during project assessments
- Collaborate with senior engineering peers on functional evaluations, project scopes, equipment schedules, and capital budgets
- Identify personal development gaps and create growth action plans
- Mentor and support junior-level engineers and increase exposure to functions outside engineering
- Lead as a subject matter expert on medium-sized, moderately complex project teams
- Expand packaging systems team capability and contribute to team growth
- Represent The Hershey Company when directing contracted project personnel and ensure contractor and supplier compliance
Requirements
What you’ll need- Minimum of 4 years of major Packaging Systems experience
- BS in Engineering or Engineering Technology; Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics, or Engineering Technology majors preferred
- Basic understanding of common packaging materials used in the food packaging industry
- Knowledge of high-speed flow wrapping
- Knowledge of secondary packaging, including carton and tray loading, statistical scales, and bagging equipment
- Knowledge of tertiary packaging, including case packing and palletizing
- Knowledge of machine and equipment design
- Knowledge of servo and control technology
- Knowledge and basic experience with Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), including Allen-Bradley and Siemens
- Knowledge and basic experience with electrical and electronic industrial instrumentation
- Knowledge and basic experience with automation and process control
- Knowledge and basic experience with industrial computer systems and networks
- Knowledge and basic experience with distributed control systems
- Knowledge of digital and basic AI principles
- Knowledge of other automation, electrical power, computer, and control technologies
- Proven experience with AutoCAD and Excel desired
- Hands-on problem-solving focused on detailed problem resolution and documentation
- Ability to apply sound engineering solutions considering costs, schedules, and operational performance
- Ability to evaluate, communicate, and build cross-functional consensus on engineering recommendations
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Strong PC skills
- Ability and willingness to work effectively in a diverse, disciplined team environment with limited supervision
- Demonstrated potential to accept new and challenging work assignments
- Demonstrated basic technical knowledge in packaging controls
- Ability to ensure contractors and suppliers adhere to company safety, security, and contractual requirements
