About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Serve as a member of the Mexico Executive Team, reporting to the Country Program Director
  • Coordinate closely with Conservation Directors and leaders across the Latin America Region
  • Ensure the Mexico program optimally contributes to TNC’s 2030 Outcomes
  • Lead conservation efforts in Selva Maya, the Mesoamerican Reef, and national initiatives involving protected areas, regenerative ranching and agriculture, and large-scale fisheries
  • Lead a team of experts and collaborate with TNC teams and external partners, including private sector, government, and civil society organizations
  • Shape transformative strategies and guide teams in effective implementation
  • Support the Mexico Director in defining conservation strategies, actionable roadmaps, partnerships, and systemic change
  • Inspire shared ownership of TNC’s conservation agenda and tools
  • Oversee conservation outcomes using adaptive management and accountability for results
  • Develop, manage, retain, coach, and develop a high-performing team; oversee performance management, engagement, training, and career development
  • Manage internal information systems to document evidence of progress and lessons learned
  • Support annual and multi-year full-cost budgets and ensure effective budget management
  • Lead conservation and governance oversight of on-site initiatives, including financial planning, monitoring, evaluation, and budget tracking
  • Lead and coordinate public and private financing proposals
  • Communicate TNC’s mission and conservation priorities to donors, partners, board members, and other stakeholders through presentations and reports
  • Direct, prepare, present, and participate in negotiations of project proposals with governmental, bilateral, and multilateral agencies
  • Act as Deputy Director for the BU Director as needed

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Over 8 years of experience in similar positions, including experience as a leader in the conservation arena and/or non-profit sector
  • Outstanding supervisory experience, including motivating, leading, setting objectives and managing performance in multidisciplinary teams
  • Track record working on sustainable development and environmental issues including forest conservation, regenerative ranching and agriculture, community conservation, fisheries, natural protected areas and/or integrated landscape management in Mexico with non-governmental, private or public organizations
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills in Spanish and English for diverse audiences
  • Fundraising experience, including identifying donor prospects, engaging with donors and writing outstanding concepts
  • Experience collaborating with private sector, non-government and community-based organizations and public authorities
  • Experience designing, implementing, and directing complex or multiple strategically important projects, including managing finances, supervising multidisciplinary professionals, and coordinating partners while meeting deadlines
  • Desired: 10 years of professional experience, including proven experience effectively leading environmental and conservation issues in large and complex programs with measurable results in Mexico
  • Demonstrated success as an inspirational and innovative leader of multidisciplinary teams, including influencing without direct authority
  • Experience working in a matrixed, decentralized, and geographically dispersed organization
  • Proven technical skills, analytical ability, good judgment, and strong operational focus
  • Demonstrated operational, implementation, and detail-oriented perspective
  • Proactive understanding of systems change approaches
  • Successful applicant must meet The Nature Conservancy's background screening requirements
