About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Manage the Conservation Transactions Team for The Nature Conservancy’s Washington Business Unit
  • Design, coordinate, and execute complex conservation transactions
  • Serve as principal project manager and/or lead negotiator on transactions with government agencies, conservation organizations, Tribes, private individuals, and entities
  • Advise conservation staff and partners on transactional tools
  • Collaborate with conservation, legal, finance, government relations, marketing, philanthropy, and science teams
  • Support fundraising through donor engagements, meetings, proposals, public grant proposals, and reports
  • Research land ownership, screen potential acquisition projects, and prepare project approval packages
  • Adjust TNC’s portfolio of conservation easements, preserves, and other lands
  • Represent the Conservancy in stakeholder and rightsholder relationships and negotiations
  • Build relationships with conservation partners and engage local community support
  • Manage 2–3 professional staff and the team budget
  • Manage team workflow and sustainable workloads
  • Build a team culture centered on innovation, learning, collaboration, risk management, accountability, integrity, and equity
  • Supervise staff with responsibility for performance management, training, and career development
  • Negotiate legally and financially binding real estate transactions
  • Plan and direct protection projects
  • Resolve conservation real estate legal matters
  • Coordinate with Western U.S. and Canada Division protection teams
  • Manage the transactions project pipeline and prioritize acquisitions, preserve transfers, and land assists
  • Collaborate with land transaction practitioners across the North America Region
  • Support fundraising efforts for transaction projects
  • Resolve complex problems independently with minimal supervision

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • BA/BS degree in natural resources management, conservation, business, law or another related field of study
  • At least 5 years’ experience in land conservation, real estate, law, business or related field
  • Experience working with landowners, corporate executives and government officials
  • Experience negotiating complex agreements
  • Supervisory experience
  • Experience developing and managing multiple projects and timelines
  • Experience working with computers, including database management
  • Experience with grant writing, securing funding, and managing project fund sources is preferred
  • Experience with federal conservation funding for real estate transactions is preferred
  • Experience with easements, fee-title acquisitions, donations, deed restrictions, facilitated land purchases, and land leases
  • Understanding of Tribal nations sovereignty and treaty rights
  • Clear written, spoken, and graphical communication in English
  • Valid driver's license and compliance with TNC’s Auto Safety Program
  • Successful completion of background screening process
  • Ability to travel up to 20%
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines
