About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Lead the architecture and development of software solutions, making strategic decisions that influence technical direction
Build technical solutions enhancing, optimizing, and iterating The RealReal’s Seller Platform
Build robust, scalable back-ends to empower seamless and engaging customer journeys
Work closely with Product partners, Engineering management, Product and business stakeholders, and cross-functional teams
Align technology development with business objectives and communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
Perform rigorous code reviews and advocate for best coding practices
Provide guidance and support to junior engineers
Research emerging technologies and trends in software engineering
Address complex technical challenges with innovative solutions and anticipate potential issues

Requirements

What you’ll need

At least 8 years of software development experience
Required experience with Java and Ruby
Proven experience with the development, scaling, and maintenance of distributed systems
Solid understanding of software engineering principles, architectural design, and agile development methodologies
Excellent analytical abilities and problem-solving skills, with the capacity to work independently on complex issues
Effective communication skills, capable of conveying complex ideas clearly and concisely
Experience using modern AI coding tools and autonomous engineering agents such as Cursor, Claude Code or GitHub Copilot Workspace
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (preferred)
8+ years of software development experience with a track record of successfully shipping consumer or business facing products
Experience with Elixir is a plus
Familiarity with front-end JavaScript frameworks such as React or Vue
Familiarity with Gradle and Spring Boot
Familiarity with Python
Familiarity with AWS
Contributions to open-source projects or a strong GitHub portfolio
