About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Reach out to and engage at-risk youth in accordance with the Stages of Change intervention model adapted for the Provincial Youth Outreach Worker program
  • Support youth in connecting to programs, services, and opportunities for healthy development
  • Engage parents and family members through self-referrals, parent groups, faith communities, and other channels; provide information on available supports and services
  • Maintain collaborative working relationships with professionals within and outside the organization
  • Work with youth, parents, family members, schools, police, and youth service providers to advocate for and improve access to programs, services, and opportunities
  • Develop composite pictures of neighborhood demographics and maps of local services, programs, and community assets
  • Promote awareness of the Provincial Youth Outreach Worker program and maintain a recognizable community presence
  • Build partnerships with community agencies, businesses, and informal community groups to offer youth programs
  • Identify emerging issues, service gaps, and opportunities to build community capacity
  • Identify staff development and training needs and participate in training programs as required
  • Enter and maintain accurate, complete service data in the TREAT database
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Child and Youth Worker Diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of one year of related experience working with youth, specifically ages 12-21
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to the life experiences and diverse needs, identities and cultural backgrounds of at-risk youth in underserved communities
  • Knowledge and a clear understanding of historical and intergenerational trauma of the Indigenous people of Turtle Island
  • Understanding of the issues faced by the urban Indigenous community
  • Knowledge of Indigenous and non-Indigenous community supports and services for youth and local youth populations
  • Skill in establishing trusting relationships with youth
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to work cooperatively and negotiate effectively with a range of community groups and service providers across sectors
  • Community development experience
  • Knowledge and skill in planning and delivering group programs and workshops
  • Ability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends as needed
  • Experience with utilizing social media (Instagram, TikTok) to share resources, opportunities, and program information would be an asset
