About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Build and operate the Customer Files Orchestration Service that makes customer documents usable by CoCounsel Legal agents
  • Orchestrate file upload, storage, extraction, embedding, and indexing end-to-end
  • Design, implement, test, deploy, scale, and operate the service
  • Own significant parts of the orchestration service from ambiguous problem definition through design, ADR, delivery, and operations
  • Make architectural decisions about consistency, delivery guarantees, crash recovery, and asynchronous state transitions
  • Build fair queuing, rate limiting, backpressure, circuit breaking, dead-letter handling, and autoscaling
  • Maintain versioned, documented, backward-compatible file and workspace APIs
  • Design for correctness under concurrency and load
  • Participate in primary on-call rotation and lead incident response
  • Instrument and trace systems to diagnose downstream notification and file-processing issues
  • Drive post-mortems and automate recurring operational fixes
  • Mentor engineers through code and design reviews
  • Partner with storage, extraction, indexing, connectors, and front-end teams
  • Integrate system design and DevOps responsibilities as part of the engineering team
  • Communicate technical trade-offs, throughput implications, correctness costs, and delivery risks
  • Contribute to products combining customer documents, Thomson Reuters proprietary content, and frontier language models

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor's or master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
  • 5+ years building production software
  • Track record of owning significant components in systems that real customers depend on
  • Extensive AWS and production Python experience
  • Production experience with Python concurrency and asyncio
  • Understanding of the Python GIL, asynchronous programming pitfalls, event-loop blocking, semaphores, pools, and background task state races
  • Kubernetes production experience, including KEDA event-driven autoscaling
  • Experience tuning scalers and resource requests and debugging production failure modes
  • Large-scale orchestration or data pipeline experience across service boundaries
  • Understanding and production experience with consistency models
  • Understanding of at-least-once versus exactly-once delivery and idempotency
  • Practical experience with queues, fair queuing, rate limiting, backpressure, multi-tenant fairness, and noisy-neighbor isolation
  • API design experience with versioned contracts, ownership, and backward compatibility
  • Real operational ownership, including carrying the pager and debugging systems under pressure
  • Strong engineering fundamentals in testing, code review, observability, CI/CD, and infrastructure-as-code
  • Clear written and verbal communication
  • Preferred: document and document management systems, extraction, OCR, format handling, very large files, and third-party DMS integrations
  • Preferred: event-driven architectures, Kafka/MSK, SQS, and event-driven autoscaling
  • Preferred: durable workflow engines such as Temporal or Step Functions
  • Preferred: retrieval, embedding, or indexing pipelines for LLM or agentic applications
  • Prior legal industry exposure preferred
  • Familiarity with team topologies vocabulary
