About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Design, develop, and own Content Tools end-to-end, including APIs and retrieval components for TR legal content
- Build versioned, schema-driven, contract-driven APIs with ownership metadata
- Design retrieval components for agentic use within latency and token-economy constraints
- Build and tune retrieval and search with TR Labs research scientists on the Vespa platform
- Define acceptance criteria and build evaluation datasets, gold data, and CI gates
- Build agent tools using Python, FastAPI, Pydantic, AWS, Claude Agent SDK, and MCP
- Contribute to shared libraries, generators, and engineering patterns
- Participate in on-call rotation and own incident response, root-cause analysis, communication, and post-mortems
- Write and improve runbooks
- Improve deployment, testing, and local-development workflows
- Instrument components with structured logging, metrics, and distributed tracing
- Capture tool-invocation sequences and per-hop inputs for agentic retrieval diagnostics
- Define and monitor SLOs for owned tools
- Use AI-assisted development for generation, review, testing, and debugging
- Provide technical direction and design-decision authority for owned tools
- Serve as a subject-matter expert and mentor junior engineers through reviews, pairing, and coaching
- Collaborate with TR Labs, CoCounsel Engineering, product owners, and research scientists
- Document decisions through project-level ADRs
- Champion ethical AI and secure, responsible engineering
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field
- 5+ years of software engineering experience designing, developing, and testing production backend, API, or data-infrastructure systems
- Demonstrated end-to-end ownership of features and components
- Mastery of Python and strong fundamentals in API design
- Rigorous unit, integration, and evaluation testing discipline
- Solid distributed-systems knowledge
- Proficiency with AWS cloud services, Datadog, and CI/CD practices, including Blue/Green and Canary deployments
- Demonstrated operational ownership, including on-call participation, architectural documentation, decision records, and post-mortems
- Fluency with AI-assisted development tools as a primary workflow component
- Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to technical and non-technical audiences
- Working knowledge of information-retrieval fundamentals
- Experience building tools or APIs for agentic AI systems, including MCP or similar protocols
- Background in legal technology, knowledge management, or other high-stakes information domains
- Familiarity with Vespa, OpenSearch, or Elasticsearch
- Experience integrating AI services, embedding APIs, re-ranking models, and RAG-supported retrieval
- Familiarity with API gateways such as Apigee
- Experience with agent and retrieval evaluation, deterministic eval suites, gold data, Promptfoo, and Langfuse
- Working understanding of Terraform and ECS or Kubernetes
- Ability to configure and optimize CI/CD pipelines
