About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Set the technical direction for the Content Tools catalog, including design patterns, schema templates, contribution standards, and tool creation guidance
  • Drive versioned, contract-driven APIs with discoverability and self-service for consuming teams and agent developers
  • Architect retrieval and search using the Vespa-based platform and partner with TR Labs on search algorithms
  • Define the MCP-based agent invocation model, token-efficient payloads, and latency budgets
  • Build and own shared development and testing infrastructure using Python, FastAPI, and Claude Agent SDK
  • Establish verified spec-driven development standards, acceptance criteria, evaluation datasets, IR metrics, and CI gates
  • Assess evaluation coverage and define continuous quality measurement using offline grading and online signals
  • Own on-call models, SLO targets, operational automation, incident response, post-mortems, and systemic fixes
  • Build observability for agentic retrieval paths, including trace-level instrumentation
  • Own capacity planning, caching, rate limiting, performance, and cost strategy
  • Serve as technical authority for Content Tools API, evaluation, and architecture decisions
  • Author cross-team Architecture Decision Records and contribute to code- and design-review policy
  • Mentor Senior engineers through architecture guidance, design pairing, and constructive review
  • Partner with CoCounsel Engineering, TR Labs, and product owners to shape requirements and roadmap
  • Establish AI-assisted development patterns and document technical decisions
  • Advise senior leadership and champion ethical AI and secure deployment
  • Drive major Content Tools initiatives from design through production
  • Establish a reliable, documented internal platform with SLO coverage, automated eval gates, runbooks, and fast incident resolution

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field
  • 8+ years of software engineering experience with demonstrated progression to staff-level or equivalent technical leadership
  • Ownership of a functional area and leadership of significant cross-team initiatives
  • Mastery of Python
  • Strong fundamentals across API design, testing strategy (unit, integration, load and evaluation), system design, and security architecture
  • Track record of designing and operating API-first systems consumed by multiple teams
  • Experience with versioning, backward compatibility, and clear contracts
  • Working fluency with information-retrieval concepts, including precision/recall trade-offs, hybrid search, ranking, and citation networks
  • Experience designing or owning evaluation frameworks for retrieval or LLM systems, including dataset design, IR metrics, CI-gated eval suites, tracing, and observability
  • Proven system-level reliability ownership, including on-call models, SLOs, and incident response
  • Demonstrated security and access-control practice
  • Fluency with AI-assisted development tools and ability to write the majority of code with AI assistance
  • Strong communication across engineering, product, and science
  • Experience with agentic AI tools or APIs and protocols such as MCP (preferred)
  • Background in legal technology, knowledge management, or other high-stakes information domains (preferred)
  • Hands-on experience with OpenSearch, Vespa, or Elasticsearch (preferred)
  • Experience operationalizing LLM workflow tooling (preferred)
  • Experience establishing platform contribution governance (preferred)
  • Familiarity with content licensing and policy-based entitlements (preferred)
  • Working understanding of Terraform and API gateways such as Apigee (preferred)
