About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Advise stakeholders across product, engineering, and marketing teams from early product development through launch
  • Review marketing strategies and assets
  • Perform first-pass review of advertising and marketing collateral, including claim substantiation, disclosures, promotions, sweepstakes, endorsements, and testimonials
  • Support review of hardware product development and identify legal risks involving product labeling and regulatory certifications
  • Support Toast’s trademark portfolio development and enforcement efforts
  • Investigate potential third-party infringement, prepare cease-and-desist letters and takedown requests, and track matters through resolution
  • Research and summarize U.S. and international laws and regulations relevant to Toast’s platform, products, services, and marketing activities
  • Maintain and improve legal review processes, checklists, templates, FAQs, and intake workflows
  • Collaborate across functions to understand Toast products and applicable laws and regulations
  • Manage deliverables, communicate clearly on routine matters, and collaborate with legal team members

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • A J.D. from an ABA-accredited U.S. law school
  • Membership in good standing to at least one state bar
  • 3-4+ years of legal experience, preferably advising corporate and commercial entities
  • Familiarity with marketing and product-related laws and regulations, and core privacy concepts
  • Experience supporting review of advertising and marketing collateral, or strong interest in developing it
  • Exposure to trademark matters or hardware/consumer product compliance is a plus
  • Experience with fast-paced technology, software, or fintech companies is a plus
  • Strong eagerness to learn and detail-oriented focus
  • Solution-oriented, customer service, and growth mindset
  • Ability to apply established legal frameworks to novel business concepts
  • Strong communication skills and ability to explain legal concepts clearly to a non-legal audience
  • Ability to work well with cross-functional teams, manage multiple projects with supervision, and recognize when to escalate
