About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Design and deliver features across Toast Android system applications in Kotlin and Java
Build device policy enforcement, out-of-box setup, firmware updates, and app updates
Write technical designs spanning on-device apps, cloud services, and Toast hardware
Lead estimation and project planning
Build and safely deploy background services using feature flags, staged rollouts, and monitoring
Lead Android application upgrades for new hardware and Android OS versions
Expand end-to-end automated testing on real Toast hardware with Robot Framework
Investigate complex production issues across the device fleet
Partner with Customer Care and pilot customers during device rollouts
Mentor engineers through code reviews, design feedback, and pairing
Collaborate with Product Management, Hardware, QA, and Software teams
Use AI tools to improve development workflow and velocity

Requirements

What you’ll need

6+ years of Android application development experience
Proficiency in Kotlin or Java
Deep experience with Hilt, AndroidX libraries, and Kotlin Coroutines
Understanding of Android application and service lifecycles, background work, and inter-process communication
Experience leading cross-functional projects from ideation through launch and production support
Ability to debug complex issues across app, framework, and OS layers using adb, logcat, and bug reports
Experience using AI tools throughout development, testing, and debugging
Clear written and verbal communication, including technical design writing
Strong customer empathy
Bonus: Android device-domain development, Android framework/AOSP/system services/system apps, Device Owner/Device Policy Controller APIs, MDM concepts, large device fleets/OTA updates, Robot/UIAutomator testing
