About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Design and build AI agents that complete restaurant onboarding work, including tool design, permissions, evaluation, guardrails, and production monitoring
Convert Toast onboarding systems—including payments, payroll, hardware, menus, and appointments—into reliable agent tools for reading state and taking action
Own and reshape the onboarding backend for unpredictable agent-driven flows
Build evaluation and measurement tied to setup quality, readiness to go live, and post-launch support needs
Ship full-stack changes in the restaurant-facing setup experience when needed
Partner with product, design, onboarding operations, and data science to turn onboarding problems into measurable agents and product changes
Contribute to technical design and architecture and establish engineering standards for AI-powered systems
Mentor engineers through code review, pairing, and sharing AI development practices

Requirements

What you’ll need

5+ years of software engineering experience building and operating production backend systems in Kotlin, Java, or another object-oriented language
Experience building on LLMs where the model takes real actions through tools, in production or serious side projects
Practical grasp of nondeterminism, evaluation, and cost
Proven ability to own outcomes end to end: design, launch, rollout monitoring, measurement, and iteration
Product-minded approach and ability to work across product management, design, and operations
Experience using AI coding tools such as Claude Code as a core part of the development workflow
Experience helping others improve with AI coding tools
Nice to have: customer onboarding, activation, growth, or workflow/task orchestration experience
Nice to have: experimentation or funnel analysis experience
Nice to have: full-stack experience; React and TypeScript preferred
Nice to have: event-driven architecture experience
