About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Design, build, and operate full-stack features from technical design through deployment and production support
Emphasize reliability, safe deployments, and operational simplicity
Partner with Product and Design during discovery to shape scope, identify technical trade-offs, and provide estimates
Write technical designs and guide architecture decisions
Build automated testing, observability, and operational ownership into delivery
Improve engineering standards through code review, mentoring, and shared patterns
Identify and resolve issues across the stack
Participate in on-call rotation and incident follow-through
Use AI-assisted development tools responsibly within Topstep's standards

Requirements

What you’ll need

5+ years of experience building and operating production-grade systems with user-facing APIs
Strong full-stack foundation with TypeScript, Node.js, REST, GraphQL, React, and Next.js
Experience designing and operating distributed systems, including event-driven architectures, message queues, eventual consistency, concurrency, and race-condition handling
Strong focus on performance, security, and maintainability
Database experience with PostgreSQL or SQL Server, including schema design, migrations, indexing, and query optimization
Experience with metrics, logging, tracing, on-call participation, and end-to-end delivery ownership
Excellent communication skills and ability to explain complex technical concepts
Ability to work with Product, Design, and QA
Preferred: background in financial technology or highly regulated spaces
Preferred: expertise with payment gateways, billing infrastructures, or authentication and user identity services
Preferred: AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, Argo CD, or GitHub Actions
Preferred: AI developer tooling and high-scale end-user applications
