About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Design, build, test, and ship firmware for Tovala’s connected ovens
  • Maintain the legacy Electric Imp/Squirrel fleet and contribute to the new ESP32-based platform
  • Own bug fixes, feature additions, and performance or efficiency improvements from scoping through production monitoring
  • Write, monitor, and maintain automated firmware test pipelines
  • Design and execute bench and fleet-subset test plans
  • Use AI-assisted tools for code generation, debugging, test scaffolding, log analysis, and documentation
  • Collaborate with thermal, mechanical, quality, manufacturing, operations, and backend teams to root-cause full-stack issues
  • Evolve code review standards, test infrastructure, release processes, and responsible AI-tooling practices
  • Document technical decisions, tradeoffs, and delivered work clearly
  • Partner with the firmware lead as a peer and own meaningful portions of the device fleet end-to-end

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • 5+ years of professional firmware or embedded software engineering experience, including shipping firmware to a production fleet of internet-connected devices
  • Strong fundamentals in C/C++ and embedded systems, including RTOS, memory, timing, interrupts, and real-time constraints
  • Experience with Python and Bash for build tooling and testing automation
  • Comfort working with, or willingness to quickly learn, Squirrel and the Electric Imp platform
  • Experience with I2C, SPI, UART, BLE, Wi-Fi, TLS, MQTT, and HTTPS
  • Experience with CI/CD and automated test workflows, ideally GitHub automations and workflows
  • Hands-on experience integrating AI-assisted software development tools into daily firmware development, testing, and debugging
  • Degree in computer engineering, computer science, or electrical engineering, or commensurate experience
  • Excellent communication and technical documentation skills
  • Strong problem-solving and root-cause analysis skills
  • Nice to have: Electric Imp OS and Squirrel experience
  • Nice to have: ESP32, ESP-IDF, and FreeRTOS experience
  • Nice to have: AWS IoT Core, device shadows, OTA pipelines, and telemetry ingestion
  • Nice to have: TypeScript, React, Flask, Go, and SQL
  • Nice to have: Manufacturing/factory tooling experience
  • Nice to have: Schematic and PCB layout reading, oscilloscope and logic analyzer use, alternate component specification, and switch-mode power supply familiarity
  • Nice to have: Connected consumer product or food-tech experience
  • For primarily remote work, candidates must have their own electronics bench and equipment
