About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Independently handle a caseload of predominantly moderate- to higher-complexity insurance defense litigation matters
  • Handle Major Case litigation matters depending on line of business
  • Prepare cases from inception through trial and appeal
  • Try cases to verdict or negotiate resolutions using pre-trial and trial litigation skills
  • Conduct legal research and prepare persuasive legal writing and presentations
  • Draft pleadings, motions, briefs, discovery, and other legal documents
  • Attend court events, depositions, and other appointments independently
  • Provide substantive case analysis and recommendations to insured clients and Claim partners
  • Collaborate with expert witnesses and consultants on case strategies, technical matters, and testimony
  • Build and manage internal and external client and business partner relationships
  • Provide training, seminars, and legal updates to insured clients and Claim partners
  • Mentor attorneys and legal support staff
  • Contribute to special projects and office goals/business needs
  • Use available technology, case management systems, and automation
  • Travel as required to meet business needs
  • Perform other assigned duties

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • 5+ years of insurance defense litigation experience as a practicing attorney
  • Juris Doctorate or equivalent international legal degree
  • Graduate of an accredited law school
  • At least 4 years of experience as a practicing attorney
  • Active license in good standing to practice law in the state(s) in which representation is required
  • Experience handling hearings, trials, dispositive motion arguments, depositions, or other court proceedings
  • Ability to transport to hearings, trials, depositions, and other meetings
  • Valid driver's license required depending on location
  • Aptitude for trying cases to a jury and proven record preparing and/or litigating jury trials
  • Strong technical knowledge in relevant practice areas
  • Strong oral and written advocacy, legal research, writing, and presentation skills
  • Track record of summary judgment and/or appellate success
  • In-depth knowledge of the bench, bar, local jurisdictional practices, and adversaries
  • Collaborative relationship-building and customer service skills
  • Leadership, mentoring, and influencing skills
  • Sound decision-making and advanced negotiation skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities with attention to detail, urgency, and responsiveness
  • Flexible and agile mindset
