About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Develop and execute strategic business plans and annual plans with local leadership
  • Share accountability for regional profit and loss results within assigned regions
  • Monitor field execution for the assigned line or industry segment
  • Establish and adjust execution strategies based on financial and operational results
  • Collaborate with BI Business Center leadership to achieve performance and underwriting standards
  • Inspire quality results within the Specialty Practice
  • Maintain specialization and awareness of industry trends through forums, boards, and bureaus
  • Share accountability for complex, high-risk, or difficult-to-close specialty deals
  • Inform product strategy for the assigned line or industry segment
  • Participate in Portfolio CUREs and assessments of the line or industry
  • Obtain corporate support for underwriting needs in assigned jurisdictions
  • Partner with the Business Unit RVP and HR on recruiting and staff development
  • Coach, train, develop, and provide performance management feedback
  • Build internal business partnerships and external relationships
  • Engage key distribution agents and specialists on behalf of Travelers
  • Collaborate with local leadership on distribution and agency management
  • Promote a consultative marketing and sales culture
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s, MBA or Master’s degree
  • Typically 10+ years of relevant experience
  • 10 years of underwriting experience
  • Strong general management background with P&L accountability
  • Thorough understanding of global and specialty business insurance trends
  • Understanding of industry/customer-based trends and enterprise-wide business and financial drivers
  • Knowledge of organizational and regulatory rules, policies, and procedures for the assigned specialty practice
  • Thorough knowledge of enterprise and industry/line-specific products and services
  • Demonstrated ability to influence and execute strategy
  • Proven ability to influence change and operate strategically in a matrix organization structure
