About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Investigate, evaluate, reserve, negotiate and resolve assigned General Liability bodily injury and property damage claims
- Directly handle assigned severe claims
- Provide quality customer service and ensure file quality and timely coverage analysis and communication with insureds
- Consult with Manager on use of Claim Coverage Counsel as needed
- Investigate claims through contact with policyholders, claimants, witnesses, law enforcement, agents, medical providers and technical experts
- Interview witnesses and stakeholders and complete outside investigations as needed
- Identify, select and direct internal and external resources such as Subrogation, Risk Control, nurse consultants, fire or fraud investigators, and other experts
- Verify injury and property damage through review of records and documentation
- Maintain claim files and document claim activities
- Review Claim File Analysis for quality standards and trend analysis
- Use diary management systems to ensure timely claim handling
- Evaluate liability and damages exposure and establish indemnity and expense reserves
- Recommend and participate in roundtables and authority discussions
- Share creative resolution techniques and develop resolution strategies
- Dispose of claims within delegated authority and negotiate with insureds, claimants or legal representatives
- Manage litigated claims, including litigation planning, counsel selection, claim and litigation strategy, and legal expense control
- Attend depositions, mediations, arbitrations, pre-trials, trials and other legal proceedings as needed
- Update appropriate parties with new facts
- Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor's Degree
- Two years bodily injury liability claim handling experience or comparable litigation claim experience
- Three years bodily injury liability claim handling and/or litigation experience
- Skilled in coverage, contract interpretation, liability and damages analysis
- Thorough understanding of the litigation process, relevant case and statutory law, and expert litigation management
- Extensive claim and/or legal experience and technical expertise to evaluate severe and complex claims
- Thorough understanding of business line products, policy language, exclusions, ISO forms, and effective claims handling practices
- Strong negotiation and customer service skills
- Demonstrated coaching, influence and persuasion skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Strong technology aptitude and ability to use business technology tools
- Attention to detail ensuring accuracy
- Intermediate analytical thinking, judgment/decision making, communication, negotiation, insurance contract knowledge, principles of investigation, value determination, settlement techniques, and medical knowledge
- Basic legal knowledge
- Insurance license(s) may be required; generally must be obtained within three months of starting and maintained with continuing education credits
