About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Investigate, evaluate, reserve, negotiate, and resolve assigned serious and complex specialty claims
  • Directly handle assigned severe claims with full damage values from $500,000 to several million dollars
  • Provide quality customer service and ensure file quality, timely coverage analysis, and communication with insureds
  • Investigate claims through contact with policyholders, accounts, claimants, law enforcement, witnesses, agents, medical providers, and technical experts
  • Interview witnesses and stakeholders and complete outside investigations as needed
  • Select and direct internal and external resources including subrogation, risk control, nurse consultants, fire investigators, fraud investigators, and other experts
  • Verify injuries and property damage through records and damages documentation
  • Maintain claim files and document activities according to established procedures
  • Develop creative resolution strategies and dispose of claims within delegated authority
  • Negotiate claims with insureds, claimants, and legal representatives
  • Manage litigated claims, including litigation plans, discovery, legal expenses, and counsel selection
  • Review Claim File Analysis for quality standards and trend analysis
  • Use diary management systems and evaluate liability and damages exposure at required intervals
  • Establish and maintain indemnity and expense reserves
  • Provide underwriting partners with guidance on loss reserves
  • Recommend and participate in roundtables and authority discussions
  • Share creative resolution expertise to improve claim outcomes
  • Apply claim quality management protocols, metrics, and litigation management practices
  • Perform other assigned duties

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • 10+ years claim handling experience, including 5–7 years handling serious injury and complex liability claims
  • Four years bodily injury litigation claim handling experience or comparable claim litigation experience
  • Extensive working-level knowledge of various business line products
  • Excellent negotiation and customer service skills
  • Advanced coverage, liability, and damages analysis skills
  • Expert understanding of litigation processes in state and federal courts, including relevant case and statutory law and procedure
  • Expert litigation management skills
  • Extensive claim and/or legal experience evaluating severe and complex claims
  • Thorough understanding of commercial lines products, policy language, exclusions, ISO forms, and effective claims handling practices
  • Strong coaching, influence, and persuasion skills
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong technology aptitude and ability to use business technology tools
  • Advanced analytical thinking, judgment/decision making, communication, negotiation, insurance contract knowledge, investigation principles, value determination, settlement techniques, litigation management, and medical terminology/procedural knowledge
  • Ability to make independent decisions on assigned cases
  • Ability to adapt to and support cultural change
