About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Investigate, evaluate, reserve, negotiate, and resolve assigned serious and complex Excess Casualty claims
- Handle assigned severe claims with potential exposure to the Travelers Excess policy
- Provide quality customer service, conduct coverage analysis, and communicate with insureds
- Investigate claims through contact with policyholders, claimants, witnesses, law enforcement, agents, medical providers, technical experts, and other stakeholders
- Complete outside investigations and interview witnesses as strategically appropriate
- Use evaluation documentation tools and diary management systems
- Evaluate liability and damages exposure and establish and maintain indemnity and expense reserves
- Implement alternate means of resolution and manage litigated claims
- Develop litigation plans with staff or panel counsel, including discovery and legal expenses
- Attend depositions, mediations, arbitrations, pre-trials, trials, and other legal proceedings
- Update relevant parties on new facts, liability analysis, and settlement options
- Evaluate recovery potential and handle or direct recovery efforts
- Assist underwriting business partners with marketing and account contact efforts as needed
- Participate in roundtables and authority discussions and share technical expertise and creative resolution techniques
- Mentor and coach less experienced claim professionals
- Guide underwriting partners on loss reserves and potential future changes
- Apply advanced litigation management, select counsel, and direct claim and litigation strategy
- Track and control legal expenses
- Fulfill service commitments to accounts and respond to agents and brokers
- Represent the company as a technical resource and comply with professional guidelines and applicable state laws
- Research legal trends and communicate information to departments and divisions
- Participate in periodic file quality reviews and perform other assigned duties
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor's Degree, or High School Degree/GED with a minimum of 4 years bodily injury litigation claim handling or comparable claim litigation experience
- 5-7 years bodily injury litigation claim handling experience for the bachelor's degree pathway
- Advanced knowledge of coverage, liability, damages analysis, litigation process, relevant case and statutory law, and litigation management
- Extensive claim and/or legal experience and technical expertise evaluating severe and complex claims
- Ability to make independent decisions on most assigned cases
- Thorough understanding of business line products, policy language, exclusions, ISO forms, and effective claims handling practices
- Technical ability/working knowledge of virtual tools such as Zoom and Skype
- Strong customer service skills
- Advanced coaching, influence, and persuasion skills
- Advanced written and verbal communication skills
- Advanced technology aptitude and ability to use business technology tools
- Advanced attention to detail and accuracy
- Advanced analytical thinking, judgment/decision making, communication, negotiation, insurance contract knowledge, investigation, value determination, settlement techniques, and legal knowledge
- Intermediate medical knowledge
- Insurance license(s) may be required and generally must be obtained within three months of starting the job, with ongoing continuing education as mandated
