About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Manage Workers' Compensation claims with lost time through conclusion
- Negotiate settlements where appropriate
- Coordinate medical and indemnity positions with a Medical Case Manager
- Handle assigned claims of low to moderate complexity and, with close to moderate supervision, claims of greater complexity
- Investigate claims by assessing policy coverage and contacting insureds, injured workers, medical providers, and other parties
- Establish and update reserves, including actuarial reserves, and document rationale
- Determine causal relatedness of medical conditions
- Manage files for quality, timely contact, documentation, and proactive resolution of outstanding issues
- Return injured parties to work and coordinate appropriate medical treatment with internal nurse resources
- Collaborate with medical and legal specialty resources to pursue claim resolution opportunities
- Develop strategies addressing statutory benefit entitlement, medical diagnoses, Medicare Set Asides, return to work, structured settlements, and litigation
- Prepare required letters and state filings within statutory limits
- Pursue offset opportunities including apportionment, contribution, and subrogation
- Evaluate claims for potential fraud
- Manage inventory with documented action plans for timely file closing or reassignment
- Manage litigation and resolve benefits toward optimal outcomes
- Negotiate claims settlements within designated authority, including structured settlements or annuities where appropriate
- Perform other assigned duties
Requirements
What you’ll need- High School Diploma or GED
- 1 year Workers Compensation claim handling experience or successful completion of the WC trainee program
- 2 years Workers Compensation claim handling experience preferred as part of the ideal candidate profile
- Analytical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Clear and concise oral and written communication
- Ability to present file resolutions to internal and external stakeholders
- Intermediate negotiation skills
- General insurance contract knowledge
- Intermediate investigative skills, including taking statements
- Ability to determine liability and assign dollar values based on damages and estimates
- Intermediate settlement techniques
- Legal knowledge applicable to the insurance industry
- Intermediate medical knowledge regarding injuries, disability periods, and treatment
- Intermediate knowledge of Workers' Compensation products, resources, technology, and jurisdictional parameters
- Advanced customer service, teamwork, and planning and organizing abilities
- Maintain continuing education requirements mandated by state regulations
- Insurance license(s) may be required and generally must be obtained within three months of starting the job, with ongoing continuing education
