About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Investigate, evaluate, reserve, negotiate, and resolve assigned General Liability Bodily Injury and Property Damage claims
  • Handle assigned severity claims throughout the claim life cycle
  • Provide quality customer service and conduct coverage analysis and communication with insureds
  • Consult with managers on use of Claim Coverage Counsel
  • Investigate claims through contact with policyholders, accounts, claimants, law enforcement, witnesses, agents, medical providers, and technical experts
  • Complete outside investigations as needed
  • Identify, select, and direct internal and external resources including subrogation, risk control, nurse consultants, fire investigators, fraud investigators, and other experts
  • Verify injuries and property damage through records and documentation review
  • Maintain claim files and document claim activities
  • Review Claim File Analysis for quality standards and trend analysis
  • Use diary management systems for timely claim handling
  • Establish and maintain indemnity and expense reserves
  • Recommend and attend or present at roundtables and authority discussions
  • Share creative resolution techniques and mentor less experienced claim professionals
  • Apply claim quality management protocols and best practices
  • Develop creative resolution strategies and dispose of claims within delegated authority
  • Negotiate claims with insureds, claimants, and legal representatives
  • Manage litigated claims and develop litigation plans with staff or panel counsel
  • Select counsel, direct claim and litigation strategy, and control legal expenses
  • Manage allocated and unallocated loss adjustment expenses
  • Attend depositions, mediations, arbitrations, pre-trials, trials, and other legal proceedings as needed
  • Update relevant parties on new facts, liability analysis, and settlement options
  • Transfer cases to another level of claim professional when required by severity or complexity
  • Fulfill service commitments to accounts and respond to agents and brokers
  • Represent Travelers as a technical resource and comply with professional guidelines and state laws
  • Share accountability with business partners for quality results
  • Evaluate recovery potential and handle or direct recovery efforts
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • High School Degree or GED required
  • Minimum of 3 years bodily injury litigation claim handling or comparable claim litigation experience
  • 4 years bodily injury litigation claim handling experience
  • Advanced knowledge of coverage, liability, and damages analysis
  • Thorough understanding of the litigation process, relevant case and statutory law, and expert litigation management
  • Extensive claim and/or legal experience and technical expertise evaluating severe and complex claims
  • Thorough understanding of business line products, policy language, exclusions, ISO forms, and effective claims handling practices
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Coaching, influence, and persuasion skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong technology aptitude and ability to use business technology tools
  • Attention to detail and accuracy
  • Advanced negotiation skills
  • Advanced insurance contract knowledge
  • Advanced principles of investigation knowledge
  • Advanced value determination knowledge
  • Intermediate settlement techniques, legal knowledge, and medical knowledge
  • Insurance license(s) may be required and generally must be obtained within three months of starting the job, with ongoing continuing education
