About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Investigate, evaluate, reserve, negotiate, and resolve assigned Specialty Liability Bodily Injury and Property Damage claims
  • Provide quality claim handling throughout the claim life cycle, including customer contacts, coverage, investigation, evaluation, reserving, litigation management, negotiation, and resolution
  • Maintain compliance with internal and external quality standards and state-specific regulations
  • Provide consulting and training resources and serve as a technical resource to the field and business partners
  • Directly handle assigned severity claims
  • Perform coverage analysis and communicate with insureds
  • Consult with managers regarding use of Claim Coverage Counsel
  • Investigate claims through contact with policyholders, accounts, claimants, law enforcement, witnesses, agents, medical providers, and technical experts
  • Interview witnesses and stakeholders and obtain statements when strategically appropriate
  • Select and direct internal and external resources, including Subrogation, Risk Control, nurse consultants, and investigators
  • Review injury and property damage records and documentation
  • Maintain claim files and document claim activities
  • Create Claim File Analysis for adherence to quality standards
  • Use diary management systems to ensure timely claim handling
  • Evaluate liability and damages exposure and establish indemnity and expense reserves
  • Participate in roundtables and authority discussions
  • Share creative resolution techniques and apply claim quality management protocols and Best Practices
  • Develop creative resolution strategies and dispose of claims within delegated authority
  • Negotiate claims with insureds, claimants, and legal representatives
  • Manage litigated claims and develop litigation plans with staff or panel counsel
  • Select counsel, direct claim and litigation strategy, and track legal expenses
  • Manage allocated and unallocated loss adjustment expenses
  • Perform other assigned duties

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • High School Degree or GED
  • 3 years of liability claim handling experience and/or comparable litigation claim experience
  • Advanced knowledge of coverage, contract interpretation, liability and damages analysis
  • Thorough understanding of the litigation process, relevant case and statutory law, and expert litigation management skills
  • Extensive claim and/or legal experience and technical expertise evaluating severe and complex claims
  • Thorough understanding of business line products, policy language, exclusions, ISO forms, and effective claims handling practices
  • Advanced analytical thinking, judgment/decision making, communication, negotiation, insurance contract knowledge, principles of investigation, value determination, settlement techniques, and legal knowledge
  • Intermediate medical knowledge
  • Insurance license(s) may be required and generally must be obtained within three months of starting the job
