About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Contribute to patient-centered care through implementation of specific aspects of the nursing process under the direction of a Registered Nurse
- Perform nursing interventions delegated by the Registered Nurse to identify and attain treatment goals
- Obtain clinical data from patients, families, or significant others
- Use interdisciplinary plans of care, including medication administration
- Perform PCT duties
- Administer medications orally, rectally, intramuscularly, or subcutaneously
- Monitor medication effects and record medications and patient reactions
- Perform venipuncture, blood cultures, bleeding times, and blood specimen collection
- Start, prime, disconnect, and regulate IV lines
- Perform tracheal suctioning, NMTs, routine oxygen therapy, and pulse oximetry
- Flush intermittent infusion devices
- Insert and discontinue indwelling urinary catheters and perform intermittent clean catheterization
- Perform neurovascular and neurologic checks
- Respond to patient requests and explain the patient care role
- Maintain knowledge of policies and procedures and participate in quality improvement activities
- Answer phones and maintain a clean environment
- Pursue ongoing learning and maintain current practice knowledge
- Clean and maintain equipment and supplies and ensure adequate supplies
- Maintain cooperative relationships, address conflicts constructively, and help resolve problems
- Maintain confidentiality of patient, physician, colleague, and visitor information
- Follow the Code of Conduct, Service Excellence Standards, and SJMH Mission, Vision and Values
- Perform duties safely and report hazards and unsafe practices
- Support nursing or hospital research projects through data collection and patient support
- Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements
What you’ll need- High school diploma or equivalent and one year of specialized nursing education
- 2 years previous experience
- Active license to practice as LPN
- Ability to apply nursing techniques within defined responsibilities to meet patient and family needs
- Awareness of the New York State Nurse Practice Act, the role of LPNs and relationship to RNs
- Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate with patients, families, and coworkers
- Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail for over 50% of work time
- Ability to walk and stand for approximately 51% to 80% of work time
- Ability to lift, turn, and position patients frequently
