About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Analyze and interpret clinical documentation for completeness and accuracy
  • Assign ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS codes to diagnoses, procedures, and services
  • Analyze operative reports and assign surgical codes according to coding guidelines and payer requirements
  • Verify and correct codes recommended by Computer-Assisted Coding software
  • Research and apply AHA Coding Clinic, CPT Assistant, federal regulations, CCI initiatives, official ICD-10/CPT guidelines, payer guidelines, and Trinity Health internal coding guidelines
  • Collaborate with healthcare providers and teams to clarify inadequate, ambiguous, or unclear documentation
  • Follow established workflows and processes
  • Review, resolve, and process coding claim edits for clean claim submission
  • Maintain required productivity benchmarks and a quality rate of 95% or higher
  • Maintain confidentiality of healthcare and financial records
  • Mentor other coders and assist team members as needed

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Senior-level coding experience and high coding proficiency
  • Applicable AHIMA credential: CCA, CCS, CCS-P, RHIT, or RHIA; or AAPC credential: CPC-A, CPC, COC, or CIC, required upon hire
  • AHIMA or AAPC certification required
  • Medical coding coursework or training applicable to the position
  • Minimum of 8 years of coding experience
  • Prior facility or professional experience including INP, ETC, SDS, or OBS
  • Knowledge of ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding and coding guidelines
  • Strong understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology
  • Proficiency with computers, electronic health record systems, coding software, billing software, and other relevant computer programs
  • Strong attention to detail
