About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Manage a section of the distribution network using SCADA and other network information systems
  • Maintain an overview of network security and availability
  • Ensure compliance with Distribution Safety Rules and relevant procedures
  • Provide advice and instructions and operate the high voltage system remotely
  • Provide rapid restoration of supply during fault situations
  • Provide technical advice to field operators and Operations Centre staff
  • Sanction the issue of safety documents
  • Comply with IIP fault reporting requirements
  • Check and authorise planned high voltage schedules
  • Comply with Grid and Distribution Codes, Safety Rules, Instructions and Codes of Practice
  • Maintain awareness of customer requirements and provide relevant information
  • Communicate with Network Operations and other business teams
  • Help develop procedures and drive continuous improvement
  • Mentor other control team members
  • Minimise Customer Minutes Lost and Customer Interruptions and deliver targets
  • Provide information supporting a high BMoCS score
  • Operate safely for the duration of each shift and progress toward EHV control authorisation

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • A minimum of an ONC or an equivalent is required
  • Experience working on and around the high voltage system as an Authorised Person or Senior Authorised Person is desirable, or alternatively experience as a Control Engineer on electricity distribution systems
  • Understanding of the Distribution Safety Rules
  • Familiarity with procedures relevant to operating high voltage networks
  • Experience managing safe working practices and working to electrical safety procedures
  • Knowledge of the regulatory environment in which UK Power Networks operates
  • Knowledge of industry Safety Documents and their significance and requirements

  • Ability to process information quickly and follow procedures promptly
  • Ability to maintain real-time knowledge of ongoing work and job priorities
  • Ability to switch between faults and planned outages
  • Competent user-level IT skills
  • Ability to understand and convey technical and safety information to Field Engineers by phone
  • Prepared to work a full-shift pattern if required
