About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Lead the Mathematics Section of ICTP and supervise a team of 10–15 research scientists
  • Define new research directions and plan and secure resources for their implementation
  • Promote ICTP’s mission in the developing world
  • Design and implement joint activities within the Research and Partnerships Division
  • Ensure scientific excellence through recruitment of scientists and research fellows
  • Build strategic scientific partnerships and collaborations
  • Represent ICTP at major international scientific events and report research results
  • Provide guidance and mentoring to junior scientists, staff, fellows, associates and visitors
  • Identify, develop and manage research activities and advise on research priorities
  • Provide technical advice on ICTP educational and training programmes in Mathematics
  • Contribute to scientific agreements with institutions and governmental bodies
  • Present research and collaboration opportunities and advocate for capacity building in developing countries
  • Represent ICTP in meetings and serve on scientific governing and advisory boards
  • Teach in ICTP international and Diploma programmes
  • Supervise Diploma theses and mentor M.Sc. and Ph.D. students
  • Participate in student selection
  • Establish cooperation with scientists from developing countries and identify their scientific needs
  • Formulate recommendations to address those needs through ICTP programmes
  • Decide on and organize scientific meetings and external activities in developing countries
  • Apply for and manage individual research grants

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Advanced University degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) in Physics, or related disciplines
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of relevant post-doctoral research experience in Mathematics or a related field
  • Preferably 5 years of experience at international level
  • Proven publication record of high caliber and international recognition
  • Technical expertise to handle complex scientific issues and determine new research directions
  • Experience in the design, implementation and management of scientific projects
  • Experience in teaching and/or mentoring undergraduate and postgraduate students
  • Experience in donor relations and/or scientific outreach
  • Experience coordinating and managing research collaborations and projects with developing countries
  • Demonstrated experience supervising teams
  • Ability to propose innovative research directions and approaches
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to establish plans and priorities and effectively implement them
  • Broad scientific perspective to coordinate diverse research priorities
  • Capacity to provide intellectual leadership and lead and motivate staff in a multicultural environment
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain partnerships and coordinate with internal and external stakeholders
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Excellent knowledge (spoken and written) of English
  • Visa required for the host country duty station
