Finance Analyst

About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Prepare, sign off, and submit claims to sponsors in multiple currencies reflecting research project expenses.
- Prepare, sign off, and submit complex financial statements requiring consolidation principles, foreign currency translation, and accrual accounting.
- Investigate and resolve discrepancies related to budgets, revenue, billings/accounts receivable, expenditures, and project financial statements.
- Administer and process subgrants.
- Monitor, investigate, and collect past-due accounts receivable items.
- Assist staff negotiating agreements by establishing financial requirements.
- Review and interpret funding-award terms and conditions to complete financial reporting requirements.
- Prepare and submit general ledger journal entries for approval.
- Apply internal policies and procedures for proper revenue recognition in University financial statements.
- Identify system-related errors or issues and recommend solutions.
- Develop and implement updates to Research Services Office training, development, and presentations.
- Analyze and close research projects after all terms and conditions are met.
- Assess expenditure eligibility and adherence to budgets.
- Participate in User Acceptance Testing for systems development as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
What you’ll need- An Accounting Designation, an Undergraduate degree in a related discipline, or a business or accounting diploma, combined with current enrolment in a professional accounting program, is required.
- A minimum of two years of financial experience in a research administration setting is preferred.
- Strong communication (oral and written), interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Superior time management skills; ability to provide timely and efficient service.
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Ability to make timely decisions and act on individual initiative.
- Knowledge of research policies, procedures, and guidelines for the major sponsors and the University of Alberta is an asset.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite.
