About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide peer support through status checks, encouragement/motivation, virtual and in-person visits, outreach, and skill-building activities
  • Support current and recently discharged patients with violent assault injuries in the UAMS ED and Trauma Center as part of Project Heal
  • Assist with recruitment, data collection, data management, analytics, research design, grant writing, and dissemination
  • Ensure brief bedside and peer support intervention components are delivered
  • Communicate effectively with research participants, research and clinical staff, community partners, and national network members
  • Operate in a supportive role within an interdisciplinary research team
  • Conduct program eligibility screenings, informed consent, and required enrollment forms
  • Conduct brief bedside interventions, needs assessments, and resource-guide reviews
  • Track and review participant encounters using data collection software such as REDCap and Excel
  • Coordinate and execute peer social skill-building workshops
  • Collaborate with Emergency Medicine, Trauma, and Psychiatry providers, hospital social workers, and community-based organizations to recruit study participants and plan workshops
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s degree in Health Education or related field, or high school diploma/GED plus four (4) years of health education experience required
  • Previous experience of being violently assaulted and treated in a hospital for penetrating injury and recovery
  • At least 3 years of experience working with health care systems, victims’ services, mental health or substance use treatment programs or community-based programs/organizations
  • Experience with engagement/customer service, recruitment, facilitating collaborative partnerships, client assessment, treatment or action planning, conversational interviews/check-ins, advising/counseling/mentoring/motivating clients, leading group discussions, and/or health promotion and health education activities
  • Intimate understanding of and experience working with the community served by individuals impacted by community violence
  • Ability to initiate and maintain positive working relationships with project staff and other organizations
  • Ability and willingness to provide emotional support, encouragement and motivation to program participants
  • Ability to uphold confidentiality and ethical practices when handling sensitive information
  • Ability to perform essential computer tasks and working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to report to work as scheduled and fulfill assigned hours with dependability and professionalism
  • Ability to receive and carry out instructions from supervisors
  • Ability to embrace feedback and apply it to enhance work quality
  • High level of mobility for outreach at various locations if needed
  • Persons must have proof of legal authority to work in the United States on the first day of employment
