About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Perform high complexity testing and assist with day-to-day Blood Bank operations
  • Perform advanced blood banking techniques
  • Dispense blood and blood components
  • Educate students
  • Provide direct patient care by supplying appropriate blood components based on accurate testing
  • Perform ABO/Rh, IAT, DAT, antibody identification, and blood-unit crossmatching
  • Run automated ABO/Rh and IAT equipment
  • Prepare and issue red blood cells, plasma, platelets, and cryoprecipitate
  • Investigate transfusion reactions and perform follow-up testing
  • Identify and work with patients who have unexpected or clinically significant antibodies
  • Maintain blood-product storage conditions and inventory
  • Monitor products for expiration, integrity, and proper handling
  • Perform quality-control testing and maintain accurate laboratory records
  • Operate and troubleshoot blood-bank instruments and testing systems
  • Follow emergency and massive transfusion procedures
  • Communicate with nurses, physicians, and other laboratory departments about blood availability and compatibility
  • Maintain documentation in the laboratory information system

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor degree in Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Sciences or Bachelor of Science in Biology, Chemistry, or other related discipline
  • Must obtain applicable ASCP certification within 1 year of becoming eligible for certification
  • Perform high complexity testing
  • Knowledge of ABO/Rh blood typing and antibody screening
  • Knowledge of antibody identification and compatibility testing (crossmatching)
  • Knowledge of blood component preparation and issuance
  • Knowledge of transfusion reaction investigation and follow-up testing
  • Knowledge of direct antiglobulin testing (DAT) and immunohematology procedures
  • Ability to operate and troubleshoot blood-bank instruments and testing systems
  • Ability to follow SOPs, AABB standards, CLIA requirements, and laboratory safety procedures
  • Must have proof of legal authority to work in the United States on the first day of employment
  • Subject to annual TB screening, criminal background check, substance abuse testing, and education verification
