About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Perform and interpret routine and advanced immunohematology testing to ensure safe and compatible blood transfusions.
- Provide direct patient care by supplying patients with appropriate blood components.
- Perform ABO/Rh, IAT, DAT, antibody identification, cross matching units of blood, and operate Automated ABO/RH and IAT equipment.
- Wash red blood cells and platelets.
- Perform platelet cross matching and platelet antibody identification.
- Perform daily reagent quality control and equipment preventive maintenance with 100% accuracy.
- Assist with quarterly, semi-annual, and annual quality control.
- Issue blood and blood components to hospital floors.
- Understand and follow the Massive Transfusion Protocol for massive trauma cases.
- Communicate with physicians, nurses, and other UAMS staff members.
- Receive samples and ensure they are appropriately labeled and properly collected for the Blood Bank.
- Assist in training new staff and students.
- Maintain competency and train on revised and new policies and procedures in a timely manner.
- Report deviations from standard operating procedures to the supervisor in a timely manner.
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences, Medical Technology, Chemistry, Biology or related discipline.
- Eligible for ASCP Certification or equivalent. Certification must be obtained within a year of eligibility.
- Persons must have proof of legal authority to work in the United States on the first day of employment.
- Annual TB Screening, Criminal Background Check, Substance Abuse Testing
- Ability to lift and carry 25 lbs.
- Ability to push and pull 25 lbs.
- Physical ability to stand, sit, bend, crawl, crouch, kneel, stoop, reach overhead, use hands, talk, hear, taste or smell, read, concentrate, and think analytically as specified.
