About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Participate in the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care for a select group of patients
  • Refer patient problems to the attending physician
  • Provide direct patient assessment and perform eye measurements
  • Test and record visual acuity for patients with all levels of acuity, including preliterate, illiterate, non-verbal, or foreign-language patients
  • Define low vision and perform pinhole, stereo acuity, accommodation, convergence, distance, and near visual acuity testing
  • Collect current data from in-person patient assessments, including ophthalmic medication use
  • Perform Amsler grid, confrontation fields, automated perimetry, and Goldmann perimeter testing with appropriate training
  • Measure intraocular pressure using hand-held applanation, applanation tonometry, and non-contact tonometry
  • Clean and disinfect tonometers
  • Perform and record glare testing, Potential Acuity Meter testing, color vision, pachymetry, fusional amplitudes, Maddox Rod measurements, OCT laser tests, and tear tests
  • Use slit lamps, slit lamp lenses, and pen lights; assess anterior chamber depth
  • Order and maintain patient education materials inventory
  • Clean and sterilize medical instruments, supplies, and equipment
  • Store equipment properly, maintain calibration, and ensure equipment remains operational
  • Follow recommended procedures for turning electronic specialty tools on and off
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High School diploma/GED
  • Current BLS certification or must successfully obtain certification within the first 30 days of employment
  • Persons must have proof of legal authority to work in the United States on the first day of employment
  • Must complete pre-employment screening, including criminal background check, substance abuse testing, and/or education verification
  • Ability to effectively perform as part of a team
  • Ability to maintain compassion towards patients during direct patient contact
  • Ability to perform ophthalmic/optometric patient assessment and measurements
  • Ability to clean, disinfect, and sterilize medical instruments, supplies, and equipment
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, crawl, crouch, kneel, stoop, reach overhead, and lift/carry 25 lbs
  • Preferred: One (1) year of ophthalmic/optometric assisting or experience in a medical setting
